Kindergarten News:
Mrs. King's Class News:
We have spent the last three weeks learning about the ocean. We learned that the ocean is divided into zones. We learned about three of those zones: Sunlit, Twilight, and Midnight. We created our own animals, picked a zone that they would live in, and explained why we chose that zone.
We have been learning about subtraction, the symbols that are used, and ways to solve subtraction problems. We really enjoy playing partner games while we learn about math.

Ms. Gula's Class:
Allergy season is among us! While the symptoms of allergies can be a usual occurrence for your child, please be mindful of the Daily Symptom Checklist that was sent out at the beginning of the school year. Many restrictions in the community have been lifted, however we are still practicing strict infection control at school for the little ones that are not vaccinated. If your child does have seasonal allergies, we will require a note from the physician stating this condition in order for them to be present in school.
If your child has any of the following symptoms, please keep your child home and contact your pediatrician for either an alternative diagnosis or negative COVID-19 test. Any students presenting with these symptoms at school will be sent home and referred to their doctor.
Loss of smell or taste Cough Sore throat Chills Shortness of breath Muscle aches or body aches Headache with combination of other symptoms Fatigue with combination of other symptoms Nasal congestion or runny nose, when in combination with other symptoms Gastrointestinal symptoms (i.e. diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite) Thank you and have a great day, Jaime Staniels

Art Room News, From Ms. Middleton:
First graders continued their animal observations. First they traced their animals. They did close up and full body renderings. Once their confidence was built up through the tracing process, they tried drawing them freehand. They are excited to make sculptures of their animal this coming week!
Second graders, as part of their unit on pollinators, did a fun exercise on symmetry. They painted half a butterfly, folded their paper then over that to create a mirror image print. They will refine their monarch butterflies this week.
Third graders learned the importance of creating thumbnail sketches in developing composition. They are creating sepia paintings of old scenes from exhibits that they connected to at the Atwood House.
Fourth graders are very excited about the tile mural they are making that will be installed in the school. It is a wall of flowers that represent their state flowers as part of their state fair unit. Local potter, Susan Dimm, has graciously offered to fire them.
Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) Dates for Grades 3 and 4
In Person and Remote Grade 3 and 4 Math: Wednesday, June 2, 2021
MCAS tests are required by state and federal law and are an important tool to promote student success and educational equity. In addition, MCAS test results will
· give information about areas of learning that have been most impacted by the pandemic,
· provide important data on which students, schools, and districts have been most affected by pandemic-related changes in schooling, and
· improve understanding of your child’s knowledge and skills in relation to the state’s learning standards, so that we can provide the best system of support and instruction in future years.
The format has been modified this year, and both in-person and remote students will be required to take the assessment. However, students will only take one session each of Mathematics and English Language Arts. This is half of the traditional expectation. Each session is schedule for about 2.5 hours to allow all students sufficient time to understand the directions, answer the questions and review their answers. Students will be given both a mask break and a stretch break during the session. Students that finish early will have indepedent assignments to cmoplete at their desks.
For students taking the assessment remotely, the content and interface will be the same as it is for in-person testing. Students and families in distance learning have received a letter outlining the expectations for space, device usage, and monitoring unique to this environment. If and when possible, it will also be important that adaquate Internet bandwith is available so limiting other device usage during this time is recommended.
Testing accommodations stated in a student's personal needs profile will be in place, and if applicable, will also be available for remote testing (some accommodations can only be admistered in person so if you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher or liaision).
Lastly, these testing dates have been pushed back into late May and June due to the pandemic. Thus, it is important that students are present for these assessments as there are fewer than normal make-up days allowed. Please let your child's teacher know if there is a planned absence, so we can make arrangements for your child's testing schedule.
