A custom that we have is to take off our slippers before we go into our house, anybody else' house and the Temple. Another custom that we have is that we never call our elders by their name. So in India, Coach Vice would be called Miss. Also there are also some extreme ones such as saying no to your elders is considered disrespectful and/or offensive.

Significant Individuals

Artee Patel won the Miss India Texas contest in 2001.

Dr. Kollengode R. Ramakrishnan is a Professor at Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, since 1978. In 2002 a scholarship for graduate students of social work was started in honor of his work.

Kalpen Suresh Modi is a popular Hollywood film and TV actor. he also worked under the Obama Administration, achieving greater political heights.He was born to Gujarati immigrants.

Pramod Chandra is an art history professor at Harvard.
Shanti Swarup Gupta, a statistician, has taught statistics and mathematics at Stanford and Purdue universities and is the recipient of numerous awards in the field.

Natvar Bhavsar is a painter who has held a number of shows at galleries like the Kenmore Gallery in Philadelphia. His work is part of the collections of museums such as the Boston Fine Arts Museum.

Dalip Saund became a U.S. congressman in 1957. Born in the Punjab region of India, he immigrated to the United States in 1920. He earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley and fought for Asian Indian Immigration rights in the US.

Dhan Gopal Mukerji was one of the first Asian Indian Americans to write for children. His works include both animal fantasies like The Chief of the Herd and novels, such as Gay Neck: The Story of a Pigeon, which won the Newbery Medal in 1927.

Zubin Mehta, musician and conductor, was born in Bombay, India. He was born in the Zoroastrian faith. He has served as music director of a number of orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Israel Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic.

Prabhupada Bhaktivedanta was the leader of the Hare Krishna movement.

Subrahmanyam Chandrasekhar won the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Meena Datt has hosted the Music Of India radio show on Saturday mornings on Houston's KPRT.

Analysis I - How did your immigration group affect Texas? What evidence of them is still here?

We affected Texas and still affect Texas because we are a diverse group of people and we have also contributed our share of awards to Texas history ( since 1990). We have also helped spread different culture and religion to Texas. DID YOU KNOW - that there people that follow Hinduism around the world? The evidence that Indians are still here in Texas is because I am Indian and I am still here! I am myself the evidence.

Analysis II - Is Texas better off because of this immigration group?

Texas is better off because of this immigrant group because Indians bring a variety of jobs and talent to Texas. And we excel at mathematics and science and we have high IQ and lots of brainpower.
