From Spartan to Proud Marine
Keegenn has finished his Marine Combat Training and will be off to start training for the job he chose, Micro-Miniature Repairer. Micro-Miniature Repairers are trained in the use of automated test equipment to troubleshoot inoperative circuit cards down to the defective component. While his next location is currently unknown, there is a hope that he and his family will get to be reunited for a short visit before Keegenn starts on his next adventure with the United States Marine Corps.
Keegenn, Spartan Nation thanks you for your sacrifice to honor and protect the United States of America as a Marine. We are proud of you! OORAH!
Fallen Southwestern Alumni Hero Receives Memorial
When David Knight started his job as S&B Construction Job Site Superintendent for Southwestern's new athletic fieldhouse, he didn't know that he would be connected to his past as a former Special Forces operator. Knight's window in his office overlooks the Jeremy Wright Athletic Complex entrance on Southwestern’s campus. After a few weeks of staring at Jeremy's name, Knight asked Southwestern Facility Director, Tyler Cooper, who was Jeremy Wright. Knight soon learned that he had a bond with Wright whom he would never get to meet.
Jeremy Wright is a Southwestern High School alumni, Class of 1992. He was senior class president and salutatorian. Wright was a highly decorated student athlete in track and field and cross country. He continues to hold the record in cross country with a time of 15:14.00 and in track and field for the 3200 with a time of 9:20:33. Wright was the State Champion in the 3200 meter in 1992 and the Robert Hinshaw Mental Attitude award recipient. He is the only student athlete in the school’s history to be state champion and qualify to compete at the state level four times. Wright later went on to run cross country and track for Wabash College (Class of 1996) where he was a two-time All American and won seven Independent College Athletic Conference Championships and the Division 2 Great Lakes Regional Title in 1993. He won the Pikes Peak Ascent two times and is a course record holder of the Mt. Evans Ascent. Wright was a three time member of the U.S. Mountain Racing team, US Snowshoe Racing Team, and champion of multiple races and series to go with numerous national sponsorships. Jeremy Wright was inducted into Southwestern’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
Two months after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, he gave up his career in medicine to enlist in the Army under the Special Forces Recruiting Initiative. This was a brand new program at the time that enabled civilian recruits the ability to volunteer to attend the Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course. Wright completed infantry and airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia and 2002 and was assigned to the 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was selected to continue his training as a communications sergeant in the Special Forces Qualification Course shortly thereafter.
Wright was deployed to Afghanistan in November 2004 in support of the Global War on Terrorism. He was a Special Forces communications sergeant assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne). While in Afghanistan, he received permission from the camp commander to continue his passion for running through the mountains outside his camp. On January 3, 2005 an enemy IED exploded near his vehicle during an operation that ended Wright’s life.
After learning of Wright’s accomplishments, Knight approached Southwestern Consolidated School District of Shelby County’s School Board of Trustees with his plan to create a memorial monument on site for Wright. Southwestern’s School Board unanimously supported Knight’s desire to create the monument dedicated to Wright in January. The monument, nestled between two flagpoles, will contain an obelisk measuring 4 foot by 6 inches bearing Jeremy Wright's biography and information about the Green Berets. Knight called upon his brothers in the Special Forces Association to help begin fundraising for the monument which has already exceeded the cost of building the monument. The SFA wants to do much more.
Each year, Wright’s parents have funded a scholarship for a senior at Southwestern High School in Jeremy Wright’s memory. Additional funding raised for the monument will be donated directly to the scholarship fund. People interested in making donations can visit the GoFundMe site created (https://gofund.me/e012f59b) or send donations into Southwestern Consolidated Schools, c/o Mrs. Lindsay Chase via Wright Memorial Donation.
While the new fieldhouse is projected to be done in April with a ribbon cutting ceremony at that time, the dedication to Jeremy Wright’s memorial monument will be held in early May. Jeremy Wright’s legacy and sacrifices have not been forgotten within the Southwestern-Shelby community.
