Picture Yourself Growing in Second Grade
Week of Respect - #IMatter
The Daily Five Update - Open For Business
In reading, the students of the 2S Crew have been hard at work learning good habits of STRONG readers. As we learn these habits, we are are consistently practicing them to internalize these reading behaviors.
We learned how to activate our schema. Activating schema allows students to make connections with previous experiences to better comprehend the text. Students can make text-to-text, text-to-self, or text-to-world connections. Making connections allows students to understand and remember what was read.
Also, we are working on self monitoring as we read. Monitoring for meaning is when students regularly stop and review what was read in order to check for understanding. Students are not reading for speed; rather, they are stopping often and asking, "Does this make sense? Can I picture this in my mind?" When the meaning breaks down, we are exploring new vocabulary and backing up to reread.
As we check for understanding, we also learned the importance of strong readers expanding their vocabulary. This week, we started our vocabulary notebooks. This is a tool your child will use to help them learn and use a variety of new words.
Talk with your child about these habits of a STRONG reader. You can use these strategies at home while you are reading to your child.
**Guided reading groups are starting. Your child will be bringing home a ziplock bag with his or her reading book in it. The bag is marked Guided Reading Bag. Please have your child read this book to you. Please return the book the next day as I may need the book for a different group. Thank you! Happy Reading! **
**To encourage independent reading and shared reading experiences at home - we have started our at home reading logs. Your child will have a bag marked Reading Log bag. Please keep this bag at home during the week. In the bag, I will do my BEST to put books on your child's level (2-3). These books are from my personal classroom library, please take good care of them! Please return the log on Friday!
Read to Someone - I Read, You Retell (using our story maps to organize our thoughts)
#GRA17 Global Read Aloud
To kick start the GRA, we watched an intro video from the author Victoria J. Coe. After brainstorming some questions we had for her, we posted our group question to her webpage!
"How do you choose meaningful story ideas? Does your own life inspire you?"
Today, we were able to watch her Q&A video (after a short sound malfunction), where she answered our question and many questions from other readers around The United States! She is wonderful ... we even connected with her on twitter! She even sent us on a secret mission to find the password to her secret webpage! We did a wonderful job following the clues and revealing ...deleted scenes from the book! Check out our #BookSnap to see our wonderful prediction and evidence!
In addition to connecting with the author, we are starting to explore connecting with other second grade students. Using flipgrid, we were able to watch and hear ideas and thoughts from students in Pennsylvania and students in Texas. We can't wait to share our own thoughts and predictions next week!
Everyday Math
Next week, we will begin Unit 2. In this Unit, fact strategies and program routines are reviewed and extended. Please continue to practice math facts with your child. We are working towards fluency of math facts within 20.
