LEGACY OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

I have a quote that I want you to think about conceptually with me that I believe is very timely in the context of Christian Education and the cultural climate in which we live.

"We have made at least a start in discovering the meaning in human life when we plant shade trees under which we know full well we will never sit." - Elton Trueblood

We live in a culture of immediacy. Are you willing actually make decisions that are for the greater good that you might not actually get to experience? Or is that someone else’s responsibility? Are you willing to make significant course corrections in your life now for the betterment of your spouse and children's future? Are you willing to actually make changes in your life to give yourself the best chance to be the best you 10 years from now?

This concept applies so well to Christian Education, leadership, and parenting. Each day our teachers here at Shiloh Christian pour into our students spiritually, educationally, and relationally.

Many times we can see the immediate or near-term result of the educational instruction or relationship based on the work that our students compose and connection in the classroom.

However, spiritually we don't always get to see the immediate result of that work. We often times won't see the fruits of our labor while the students are here at Shiloh.

The fruits often come when students enter college, the workforce, encounter significant circumstances in their life, begin raising a family and how they instill values into their own children.

When our students reach those points in life the decisions they make have to be filtered through the values and principles they have been taught in their formative years.

That is why we are here and why Christian Education is vital for their future, the future of our families, the future of NWA, and our faith for generations to come!

A couple of years ago Chris Sutterfield brought some historical literature by my office that was on a debate between Ben Franklin and George Whitfield on the purpose of Education and Virtue. (he knows I love history and have an obvious love for Christian Education).

In this article, Whitfield asserted that:

"Christian educators need to remember that even the inculcation of virtue, and fostering the desire to serve, can only be a secondary goal in true Christian education. Christian education must have a transcendent vision for Christ and his glory."

This is such a great reminder that we often have to look past the immediate to see the long-term goal and vision that God has for you personally and our school collectively. Remember each day you shape the legacy that you will leave through the decisions you make and the character that you have!

So, I will leave you with this: Are you willing to plant shade trees under which you know full well that you will never sit."

I challenge you to commit to the Legacy of Christian Education here at Shiloh Christian School. We are in an incredible chapter of this school's history. Don't miss it!
