Principal's Message

Dear Oak Hills Families,

I hope you are enjoying these beautiful Autumn days. Since Comprehensive Distance Learning is now confirmed until early February, my teachers and I brainstormed some tips you or a caregiver could use to help your student have a successful online school experience. Please be aware that teachers are teaching to these guidelines and expectations. However, whatever you can do to reinforce these expectations will help.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

  • Create an organized learning space, with necessary supplies for learning.

  • Post a daily/weekly schedule that is visually accessible.

  • A fidget tool can help a student remain focused during a lesson. Learning spaces should be free of all other distractions, such as toys and food, that may shift attention away from learning.

  • For students working in shared/group learning environments, establishing an organized, independent learning space becomes even more critical in order to access learning. Adults: Please spread students out, whenever possible, and remain nearby for support as needs arise.

ROUTINES FOR LEARNING

  • Students should attend only their own classroom Zoom meetings, optimally on their own device.

  • Show students how to use important Zoom functions, such as mute and unmute, independently.

  • Remain ‘muted’ to minimize background noise and classroom disruption for all.

  • Encourage the use of headphones, especially when sharing a learning/work space.

  • Use a plain background, such as a wall, to minimize visual distractions.

  • As much as possible, keep the camera on during live Zoom sessions. Teachers will work directly with individual students to make agreements around camera use.

  • A Zoom session is a classroom space during virtual learning. Please attend only your assigned Zoom classroom meetings. Do not join other Zoom sessions, or invite other students to join your Zoom session.

  • Please monitor technology use during instructional times. Students should be regularly accessing Zoom, Seesaw, or Dreambox, with occasional videos pushed out by the teacher via YouTube.

FOSTERING INDEPENDENCE THROUGH PRODUCTIVE STRUGGLE

  • Encourage your student to do their own learning.

  • Learners may need a few moments to think and sometimes will need a couple of attempts.

  • Notice-- Is your student looking at you before speaking or responding? This may indicate that your presence is getting in the way and your child is ready to take on more ownership of the learning.

  • If your student is stuck and asks for help, here are a few questions you could ask:

  • What might you try now?

  • How might you start this?

  • Exactly what part are you having trouble with?

  • What could be another way to approach this?

  • Please notify the teacher if your student is struggling with a concept.

  • Maintain a growth mindset. Reinforce effort and persistence. Reflect on strategies used during the learning process.

Here is an easy document for you to print that you can hand to your student's caregiver(s). We know that you are doing so much to support your student. Please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Ray, our Counselor, Ms. Rawland, our Student Success Coach, Mrs. Hansen, our Assistant Principal and/or myself if there is anything we could do to assist you.

I look forward to seeing you at 7pm tonight for the PTO meeting.

Warm regards,

Sheila Baumgardner
