Setting the Story to Music
Crossing Bok Chitto Social Studies/Music PD w/ Jadyn Harris
Purpose:
this book is especially compelling; however, it’s set in Mississippi well over 100 years ago, and many children may have trouble connecting to the characters or think it’s simply a story, and that these types of situations never really happened. Allowing children space to dive artistically into a story gives them the opportunity to connect to the characters, situations, scenes, and respective emotions.
Method:
- People with matching cards are grouped together
- Go to the part of the book with Martha Tom in the forest. Read the paragraph.
- Person with Card 1: Choose a solfege syllable to sing/play sentence A.
- Group with Card 2: Choose a solfege syllable to sing/play sentence A. (This is “Call & Response.”
- Continue in this manner until the end of the book, skipping for time as necessary.
- You may play an entire sentence on one note, or you may find different notes for different words, but keep in mind that the more notes you choose, the more difficult it will be to remember later.
- Don't forget to celebrate! Clap for each other when you're finished with the story. This is an achievement, and it takes guts to play and sing for each other!
