Benson Elementary Brain Club
Our Growth Mindset Groups; February-April 2015
In Our Weekly Brain Club Meetings We Used Many Literature-Based and Hands-on Resourses
We used, Your Fantastic Elastic Brain (author JoAnn Deak, Ph.D.) as a taking-off point for our Club meetings which introduced our Members to the power and wonders of their own brain. A BIG idea was for our Members to learn that they can stretch and shape their OWN BRAIN. Even though a subject, part of a subject, or learning a new academic, social, or personal skill might seem really difficult at the time, each Member is taught (and practices at each group meeting) that they have the power to shape their brain and work toward reaching their goals.
Additionally, we have used resources based on Carol Dweck's Growth Mindset research. We learned that we can increase our successes by: developing new learning strategies, practicing effort and persistence, and focusing on our growth (rather than perfection).
A video explaining neuroplasticity--how we change our brains which creates opportunities for "easier" learning.
