Ruby
Crystal Structure
Ruby has a trigonal crystal structure. A trigonal crystal system's axes and angles in this system are similar to the Hexagonal System. They are often combined as Hexagonal. In the cross-section of a trigonal crystal there will be three sides.
How Its Mined
Ruby's are mined mostly in Thailand, the Pailin and Samlout District of Cambodia, Burma, India, Afghanistan and in Pakistan.
Characteristics
Ruby has a hardness of 9 and is red to dark reddish-brown. Its luster is vitreous to adamantine. Ruby does not have cleavage but may have parting.
What Its Worth
A 1 carat ruby is worth about $1,750 to $2,250. Rubes values depend on many things. If it is bright red it is worth more but if its dark red the color has a negative effect on the brightness. If there is a 5 carat ruby it could be worth twice as much per carat then a 1 carat ruby.
