Yes/ No Question Form - The Verb ''To Be'' in the Simple Past


To ask a Yes/ No question with the verb ''To Be'' in the Simple Past, simply inverse the subject and the verb.


Form: Verb ''To BE'' + Subject + Rest


Example:


Was Juan at school yesterday? Yes, Juan was at school yesterday.

V + S + R (Verb + Subject + Rest)


Were the keys on the table? Yes, the keys were on the table.

V + S + R

Information Question Form with the verb ''To BE'' in the Simple Past

To ask an Information Question with the verb ''To Be'' in the Simple Past, start with a question word and then inverse the subject and the verb.


Question Word Review: Who, What, Why, Where, When, How, How much, How many, How often, How old.


Form: Question Word + Verb + Subject + Rest


Example:


Where was Juan last night? Juan was at work last night.

QW + V + S + R


Where were the keys? The keys were on the table.

QW + V + S + R

To ask a Yes/ No question with a regular or irregular verb in the Simple Past, simply use the auxillary Did.


Form: Aux. Did + Subject + Verb + Rest



Example:


Did you buy a new car? Yes, I bought a new car.

Aux. + S + V + R


Did Manuella work yesterday? No, she didn't work yesterday.

Aux. + S + V + R

Information Question Form - Regular and Irregular Verbs in the Simple Past

To ask an Information Question with a regular or irregular verb in the Simple Past:


Form: Question Word + Aux. Did + Subject + Verb + Rest



Example:


When did the bus leave for Montreal? The bus left for Montreal at 12:15.

QW + Aux. + S + V + R


Who did Cynthia invite to her party? Cynthia invited her friends to her party.


QW + Aux. + S + V + R
