TES Goals
- Increase student to student interaction in conversation, summarizing, and discussion of content
- Vocabulary through student talk and rigor of text
- Complexity of Text
- Increase questioning of deep comprehension with all reading groups at each level. Do not wait for a student to be reading on a level for them to answer questions on that level orally.
- Application of phonics to multi-syllabic words in 2-5 and strong emphasis and mastery in K-1
- Growth Mindset and STAMINA
BENCHMARK OPENS
SEPTEMBER 5TH-25TH IS THE BENCHMARK WINDOW.
A couple of Reminders and Thoughts about Testing:
- We want the best snapshot of the students' true ability at this point in time.
- You will be testing your own students for this Benchmark but MOY and EOY the students will be scored by someone other than the classroom teacher. This is for K-3 Read to Achieve standards.
- There are two optional assessments: Oral Language and Vocabulary. It is recommended that you do these for Red and Yellow performing students to help determine deficits and needs.
- I know there are teachers in the county who jump levels such as going to R or O and move backwards to try and get a higher TRC score because some of the books are easier than others--DO NOT do this! This does not give us the best snapshot of our students. We had students this summer who were "proficient" on paper and could not go to summer camp but struggled BIG TIME! This also is the same as picking the hardest books for BOY and the easiest at EOY--Is this giving us an accurate picture of our students?? If we inflate or deflate scores for "our charts"--then we are hurting students. Regardless of other schools and scores, TES will not do that--we will continue to put children first.
- Read the reminders on Reading 3D before each test just so you remember the expectations. We have been away from the program all summer and it is a good refresher.
- If a student is testing TRC on a level higher than your grade level--the TRC response needs to be scored by the grade level the child is reading on. For example, if you have a Kindergarten student who is reading a level G. The first grade teachers will need to score the written response for this level. The teacher who scores it should sign the bottom of the response and date it so that we have it for reference. This is to ensure our students are meeting the demands of the standard at that grade level before we give them the score.
- Our new staff---if you are in doubt--ASK for Help!
We will review these testing guidelines for K-3 in PLC the first week of September! Please take a look at it before in case you have any questions!
