Dear Families,
Our classes are full of tree discussions and observations as our students are investigating how trees are around us every day. The focus this week has been investigating and creating a list of familiar foods that come from trees. The students have been talking about different foods that comes from plants like fruits and seeds and asking themselves questions about differences between plants and trees.
Our discussions have centered around how trees are important sources of food and about the transition from seed to tree to fruit. They have also noticed how certain things that might not look like they come from trees, like cashew nuts and almonds, actually do.
During our class activities we have used manipulatives of objects that star with the sound /t/ like trees to help reinforce phonetical awareness of alliterations, words that start with the same sound. They have also rhymed their names to funky words. We’ve also used the scale to compare the weight of different parts of trees like seeds, leaves, flowers and bits of trunks.
They are currently in the process of making “Their own trees". Next we will continue to explore taking care of trees and have an expert visit our classroom. Today we made a delicious refreshing lemonade.
Have a nice break!
