Writing
Next, we will do a quick review of cursive. By the end of this year, students should be able to form all letters in cursive (both upper and lowercase) and read cursive writing.
Social Studies
As you are aware, we began this school year with a review of your child's absolute location on Earth, aka their town, county, state, country, etc and cardinal/intermediate directions. The fourth grade curriculum is North Carolina centered, therefore, students must know their location, particularly the name of their state, in order to be successful in Social Studies this year.
We will now move into the basic geography of North Carolina. Students will be introduced to North Carolina's three regions, water, natural resources, and economy. These concepts will be reviewed and expanded upon several times throughout the year.
Science
This year, Science started out with a review of lab safety rules and the scientific method. Students were introduced to the scientific method, and we utilized it as we tried to determine if a paper airplane would fly farther with or without a paper clip attached to the back. Students learned that it is important to go through this process in order to truly test and revise a hypothesis. We also discussed how various scientists, such as those at NASA, use this method to help them discover lots of things about our world and universe.
We just started a new unit on Earth/Moon systems. In this unit, students will explore why we have day and night, Earth rotation and revolution around the sun, moon facts, and phases of the moon. Students will be asked to identify each individual moon phase when given a picture, so look for some study materials to come home at the end of next week. We have had some great discussions and questions about these topics. It is wonderful to see them so excited to learn!
