Dear Bedford Public Schools Community,
This week, we are piloting a new template/format for my weekly update (inspired by our school principals and administrative assistants). Please let us know how you like it via this brief survey. It has been wonderful to continue to get to families via walking the trails--there are two more, sign-up here (though given the forecast, tomorrow's walk at Franklin Park may convert to a coffee talk!--please register so I can let you know). Finally, my Community Survey link closes on Monday--please share your thoughts!

🏫 School Committee Meeting
Reducing the spread of respiratory illnesses, like influenza, this fall and winter is more important than ever. The flu season traditionally starts in September and ends in April, with a peak in cases from January through March. Influenza can cause serious illness and result in missed days of school as well as missed days of work for those caring for sick family members. Vaccination is the best way to protect your child from this potentially serious disease.
The Bedford Health Department is holding a town-wide flu clinic on Saturday 10/21 from 9 am – 12 pm at JGMS. Book an appointment here: https://www.bedfordma.gov/200/Flu-Clinic-Information---Community Download Registration Form here: https://www.bedfordma.gov/DocumentCenter/View/2975/2023---2024-Flu-Registration-Form
Additionally, The Bedford Health Department is hosting school-based influenza vaccination clinic for students this year on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at Bedford High School from 7:45 to 8:55 am in the Large Group Instruction (LGI) room and at JGMS from 9:25-10:26 am in the School Lobby. The flu vaccination will be offered free of charge to any student regardless of the insurance status. However, insurance information will be required from those who have health insurance for reimbursement of the administration cost. Steps for securing a vaccination appointment for the School-based Clinics on 10/24 and required forms can be found here – https://www.bedfordma.gov/201/Flu-Clinic-Information---School-Based .
From the Women of Science Co-chairs Lisa Morrison & Heather Kurzman:
Each spring Bedford High School hosts the Women of Science Scholarship Competition. This year we are looking to develop new community partnerships with local science and technology companies. Corporate sponsors can help us create opportunities for students to gain access to role models they may not otherwise have through providing financial support and/or female volunteers.
If you work in a technology-/science-related field and feel that your company would be a good fit as a corporate sponsor please reach out to us at: Lisa_Morrison@bedfordps.org or Heather_Kurzman@bedfordps.org
BEST PTO School Community Appeal for Plaza Family Support
The BEST PTO has been thinking of how our school community can help welcome our new families living in the Plaza, and we’d love your help in accomplishing this! The people of Bedford have invested so much time and energy in helping the families adjust to the new environment and integrate into this outstanding community. While there are several other ongoing efforts to help with resources and transitions, the BEST PTO Board has been brainstorming some ideas of how our families could help make an impact.
Throughout the years, Tricon Sports has been wonderful in helping us coordinate school spirit wear fundraisers. We love seeing the bursts of royal blue pop up throughout our community, proudly displaying school pride! Through Sunday, October 22nd, the BEST PTO will be accepting donations to put towards purchasing a long sleeved shirt option at $12 per item. Tricon has agreed to ship directly to the BEST PTO with no shipping charges added. Financial contributions can be done through Membership Toolkit (https://bestpto.membershiptoolkit.com/form/m/261500) or Venmo (@Best-PTO). When using Venmo, please indicate “Spirit Wear” in the comments. We are hoping to order at least 40 to provide to our students at Davis and Lane. However, if we receive more financial support than needed to fulfill our elementary aged students, we would love to extend the offer to our families with middle and high school students.
The BEST PTO is honored to be a part of this community where so many individuals and groups have gone above and beyond in assisting with resources and transitions. We have witnessed tremendous displays of generosity, compassion, and support from the wonderful Bedford community in providing a helping hand to our friends and neighbors in need. If you have any questions, please reach out to best.PTO.firstname.lastname@example.org
