Math
We are continuing to work with number bonds and early addition concepts. The students are practicing visualizing the equation in both directions (_+_=_ and _=_+_). While we are currently working with number bonds and pictures, we are starting to create number sentences which will lead us to equations in the near future.
Reading and Phonics
We have been working on finding and reading books at our independent levels. The students have also focused on character and setting within their stories.
In phonics this week we wrapped up our work with short vowel sounds with some review. We also began to talk about digraphs (letters that together make a single sound) such as "th", "sh", and "ch". We are finding these sounds at the beginning of familiar words.
Writing
We continued our work this week with our How-To writing. A major focus of this unit is on being specific and detailed in our instructions to the reader. We noticed how easy it was for a reader to be confused if we put things in the simplest terms. Good how-to writers write as if their reader is brand new to the task at hand.
Box Tops
PTO would like to remind you to keep collecting Boxtops. Please send in any boxtops you've collected so far by February 28th.
Read-a-thon
Each year our school PTO and student council sponsor a read-a-thon for all grade levels. This fundraiser for our school gets everyone involved in the reading. Kindergartners can participate to earn prizes and can raise money for raffle tickets. Further information regarding this will go home in next week's Friday folder (the 28th).
