Peak School Library Newsletter
February 2013
What a week we had!
Read on for more information, or see our Library Page on Planet Peak.....
Oh wow - the costumes!
Monday morning was a blaze of colour at Peak School, as Where's Wally, Cat in the Hat, 5 Dorothys, Thing 1, 2 and 3 and Harry Potter all walked through the gates to kick off our Book Week. The parade was a living celebration of books and stories, as seen in the pictures that can be downloaded from the Event Photos tab on Planet Peak.
Parents' workshop
It was a great pleasure to welcome parents into the library to talk about how we inspire our children to read. We shared common difficulties we have with reluctant readers, as well as tips and tricks to inspire our children to love reading. The strongest message of the day was to keep reading to our children - they are never too old to be read to by their parents.
And the winner is......
We had a huge pile of competition entries to judge, from designer bookmarks, to book illustrations, to writing entries and the very popular loo competition, where pages of picture books were stuck up in the bathrooms for children to guess! The quality of the art work in particular was wonderful and these are now displayed in the library.
Alan Gibbons
Alan Gibbons did more to inspire the children to read and write in two days than we could have possibly hoped for. He was dynamic, warm and funny and, as a teacher by training, had a natural way with the children that had them hanging on to his every word. Each class in years 4, 5 and 6 were lucky enough to have an hour's workshop with Alan and their teachers were thrilled with the quality of the writing they produced. We sold out of books and have had to order more from the UK. They will be handed out at school as soon as they arrive.
Theadora Wittington and Anjali Mittal
We were thrilled to welcome local picture book author Theadora Wittington and "chapter" book author Anjali Mittal to read their books to the children in years 1,2 and 3 and to talk about being an author and having a book published. The children were fascinated, asked interesting questions and those of them who had ordered books enjoyed receiving their signed copies.
Library Bag competition
We have nearly run out of Peak School library bags and thought this was a great opportunity for the children to design a new one. They have been asked to come up with a design on an A4 sheet of paper, portrait orientation, in black and white, with their name on the back. The competition was announced during Book Week, and we will be accepting entries until the end of term. The winning entry will be used for the new Peak School Library Bag.
