Art Students Create Work Based on Influential African American Artists
Seventh and Eighth graders looked at the traveling group show, "30 Americans," which was on display at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia last year and is currently enroute to the Columbia Museum of Art in South Carolina. Nationally celebrated as one of the most important exhibitions of contemporary art in the United States within the last decade, 30 Americans showcases an influential group of prominent African American artists who have emerged as leading contributors to the contemporary art scene in the US and beyond.
The exhibition and accompanying catalog explore the evolving roles of Black subjects in art since the 1970s and highlight some of the most pressing social and political issues facing our country today. Students chose one artist from the exhibit and looked closely at their work, style and contributions. Then, using the symbol of a heart as a unifying theme, our artists created a drawing inspired by their chosen artist's style. Three examples are shown below.

Grade 8 Students Use Art to Process Emotions
On our synchronous snow day last week, artists participated in a drawing exercise to help with feelings related to things in our lives that are IN our circle of control and things that are OUTSIDE of it. We talked about how colors, lines and shapes can portray a variety of emotions and created a scribble drawing to represent our feelings. The center of the paper was cut to signify our "circle of control," while the background scrap represented everything outside of our control. We had some great conversations about gaining perspective and focusing on what we can control in a positive way.

Information about School Pictures - Update
We have made arrangements for one more opportunity to have school pictures taken on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, an early dismissal day for students. Families who want their child's picture included in the yearbook who have not had a picture taken should plan to attend on this day. This opportunity can also be used for students who want a retake. More information will be provided.
If you do not want to take a picture retake and would rather get a refund, then visit the Barksdale website (click on Contact Us, Refund) and follow the instructions.
If you pre-purchased a package but did not have your photo taken and have not received your refund from Barksdale yet, then contact them directly for the refund by calling 1-800-220-7667 or visit their website www.Barksdalephoto.com (click on Contact Us, Refund).
Internet Safety Information from the Counselors' Corner
We want to make families aware of a social network that has become popular among students and comes with safety concerns called Discord. This was originally a network used for gamers to communicate but has expanded to include many groups and topics. It has gained popularity and has over 100 million users. There are no parental controls available for this network. Children can accept friend requests from people who are unknown to them (and anonymous) as well as be exposed to mature and inappropriate content.
Here is a link to Common Sense Media’s Parents’ Ultimate Guide to Discord. This resource contains a summary of this network’s features and Frequently Asked Questions, as well as safety concerns for parents. If your child is using this network, you may want to have a conversation about how it’s being used.
