Wiggin Street Parent Update

January 6, 2023

Better Together

Dear Wiggin Street Families,

We hope you all had a wonderful time with friends and family over the holidays and wish you a Happy New Year! It has been a great week getting back into a routine with our students, and seeing the growth they have made in their mid-year assessments.

Our Math-a-thon starts on Monday, and more details can be read below. Also, we are happy that Richard Cowdrey has rescheduled his visit for January 27th.

Lastly, we hope the weather does not impact school, but you can find information in this update about how decisions are made if we need to close or delay for inclement weather.

Stay warm,

Christy Grandstaff

New Year, New Goals

Many of us set New Year Resolutions for ourselves whether we strive to be more healthy, do more random acts of kindness, become more organized, etc. Helping our children to accomplish their goals through forming habits creates lifelong skills. Try picking something to support your student and make it a habit. For example, together you can check their planner or backpack daily, read together each night, provide quiet time for homework and maybe set a timer with time being increased with each new goal. Here are some times for making new habits that some of our students read about this week:

1. Define Small, Specific Goals (Make more specific and concrete goals.)

2. Make it Easy for Yourself (Think of ways to work around barriers.)

3. Get an Accountability Partner (Find someone working toward the same goal as you.)

4. Use External and Internal Reminders (Post-it notes, to do lists, and daily alarms)

5. Give Yourself Time (Allow yourself to make mistakes.)

Math-A-Thon

We are excited to kick-off our Math-A-Thon fundraiser on Monday, January 9th. The Wiggin Street School Math-A-Thon will merge academics and fundraising. Students will complete a series of math questions that will earn them points towards prizes! First, students will ask for sponsors to pledge donations. Donors can pledge a flat amount or make a pledge per problem solved correctly. After students have completed a series of math problems that total 100 points, they will collect the pledge money from their sponsors. Finally, they will return all of their donation money to school and prizes will be awarded.

Students will learn more about the prizes on Monday. The money raised from this fundraiser will help the school purchase Makerspace & STEM resources. Our school and students have benefited greatly from your generosity of past Math-A-Thons. We appreciate your support of this fundraiser.

Richard Cowdrey- Visiting Author/Illustrator

We are excited that Richard Cowdrey, bestselling author and illustrator of the Fiona the Hippo series and Gambier resident, has rescheduled his visit to Wiggin Street for January 27th.

We will have a limited number of books to purchase on the day of the author visit for those that missed the preorder sale. Cash, check, and/or card will be accepted that morning. Paragraph's will have a table set up in front of the office during morning drop off.

2022-23 School Fees

School fees are assessed and must be paid every school year. Elementary school fees are $30 per student. You can pay by credit card or bank draft on-line using the PayForIt.net website, or you can pay by sending a check, cash or money order at Wiggin Street School or the MVCSD Board Office.

Inclement Weather Calamity Days

The following link will provide you with details shared by Superintendent Seder on how the decision is made for closings and delays. “School Closings and Delays - How is the Decision Made”

Also, we use ‘Instant Connect Alerts’ as our closings and delays notification system which is how you probably received this Parent Update. If not, please make sure you have signed up at Instant Connect portal.

Lastly, if school is on a 2-hour delay, we will start school at 11:00 am with drop-off beginning at 10:40. Lunch will always be pizza on delay days, and no breakfast will be served.

WINTER WEATHER

Please remember that students will go outside on days where the temperature with wind chill accounted for is 20°f and above. Be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather each day. Coats, hats, and gloves are necessary at this time of the year. Boots are required for playing in the snow. If you need assistance with winter outerwear for your child, please contact our school, and we will happily find warm clothes for them.
