Thomas Schalmo, Principal
Greetings Northstar Community!
We are now well into the second semester of this school year, and there is a lot to celebrate here at Waukesha North!
We recently had a lot of fun with our winter spirit week and pep assembly, during which we celebrated our winter sports teams and engaged in our annual staff vs. student volleyball tournament. Our Northstar Players did a remarkable job with their winter musical, The Wedding Singer. Our North dance team took third place in the statewide hip hop competition. Our teachers continue to engage in professional learning and work diligently to implement strong instructional strategies so our students are able to succeed.
Coming up soon, our juniors will take their statewide ACT test, our freshmen and sophomores will take their ACT Secure tests, our sophomores will take their Forward exam, and our AP students will take their AP tests. Thank you in advance for helping ensure our students are ready to demonstrate all the knowledge and skills they have learned this school year!
And, of course, graduation is upon us for the Class of 2023 -- from walking across the stage at the graduation ceremony to Project Graduation and all the festivities, there will be much to celebrate!
I encourage everyone to stay up to date on all that is happening here at North by checking out our weekly Northstar News & Notes e-mail, visiting our Waukesha North website, and following us on Twitter!
Thanks to our teachers and students for all the hard work they put in on a daily basis and to our families for the continued partnership! Let's make it a great spring, Northstars!
Mr. Schalmo

Hello Northstar Families!
I hope everyone is having a great start to the second semester. Before we know it, the school year will be done!
Parents, please utilize Infinite Campus to check your child’s grades and assignment completion. If your child is missing any work, they should request to work with them during JIT Wednesday-Friday. JIT is the perfect time for your child to ask their teacher clarifying questions about an assignment, work with their peers to finish a project, or to prepare for a summative assessment!
Testing season is also upon us, with March and April being two very busy months for our Northstars. The ACT Plus Writing will be given to all Juniors on Tuesday, March 7. It is a REQUIREMENT for all juniors to take this exam. Freshmen, Sophomores, and Senior do not attend school on this date. New this year, the ACT will be taken online, which will require students to have their iPads fully charged upon arrival at school. Keyboards will be provided for the writing portion of the assessment. Phones, smart watches and other electronic devices are not allowed in the testing room and should be left at home or in lockers.
Below is the testing schedule for the remainder of the year:
Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have. We appreciate your continued support as we work to ensure that all our students are successful here at North.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Christina Ali
Brian Schlei, Assistant Principal (A-G)
Greetings, Northstars,
This month I would like to share some reminders that relate to hats, jackets and bags. In addition to school policies designed to keep classrooms safe, we have partnered with the Department of Justice and local law enforcement to engage in discussion about what we can do to make our school as safe as possible. In accordance with those recommendations and our school policies we do not allow students to wear hoods, hats, bulky jackets or to carry backpacks.
Hats and hoods hinder the ability to effectively identify students and would be an easy method for an outsider to use to conceal their identity in order to gain access to the building or our classrooms. Large jackets and backpacks create a concern due to the ability to conceal items, including weapons. While there are many ways that can be accomplished, these are easy to control and are similar to the expectations at many large events such as concerts and sporting events. We require students to store these items in their locker during the school day and politely redirect students to do so if we see these items in the hallways.
We know that some of these items offer comfort and convenience. In addition, there are sometimes questions about what might still be okay to wear or carry. Students are allowed to wear headbands, and lighter jackets and sweatshirts are still okay. For students that want to carry items for multiple classes there are binders that zip up and we do allow small purses to carry personal products.
Thank you for helping to guide these conversations with your student at home, we take school safety very seriously and appreciate your partnership in making that happen.
Respectfully,
Brian Schlei

Library Catalog - Destiny Information
Did you know that you have the ability to search, hold and read books in our district libraries from anywhere, on any of your devices? Just have students use the app on their iPads called "Follett Destiny'' (the one with a tree) that takes them directly to the traditional catalog. Or the newer look is the Destiny Discover app (see image below). Both apps will accomplish the same task- just a different look. Click on "Catalog" to search for a book or another resource. If you would like to place a hold on a book, or read an electronic copy of the book, or to view your own account, you just need to be logged in first. You will see “Log in'' in the upper-right hand side of your screen. Use the same username and password that you use for your other accounts in the district. Username is a first part (before @) of your student’s SDW email account (first initial+last name+###@stu.waukesha.k12.wi.us). Password is lunch code+safe word.
Find some New Titles and place them on hold. We will deliver it to your English class.
Don’t have an English class we will then look to see what class we can bring the book to.
Here is how you see Recently Added Titles
Is Your Child Too Sick To Attend School?
Deciding when to keep a sick child home from school can be a difficult decision. To help identify illnesses in our schools, parents/guardians are encouraged to report their child’s specific symptoms when calling in sick to the health room at their child’s school. Voice messages can be left for our health room assistants 24 hours a day on a confidential voicemail. For guidelines and additional information, please review the following information:

At North, we are focused on ensuring students are in a productive learning environment from the bell signaling the start of class to the bell ending class -- in other words: bell-to-bell.
From bell-to-bell:
1) Students' cell phones should not be seen or heard. Like last school year, students may either turn their phone into their teacher's cell phone caddy at the start of class or leave their cell phone locked away in their locker.
2) In order to be able to safely identify all students, hats and hoodies may not be worn in the classroom or in hallways.
3) Students must be in their classroom on time and must remain in the classroom until dismissed by their teacher at the end of class.
Thank you for your partnership in ensuring your student is successful from bell-to-bell!
Backpacks
School safety and security has become a key issue across our nation.
Therefore, all backpacks must be stored in student’s lockers during the school day. Students will not be allowed to have backpacks, cinch sacks, bins, etc. and full size purses (no larger than 7” x 10” x 2”) in classrooms and during passing times, unless they are coming to or leaving school.
We understand that there may be some student exceptions to this practice due to a variety of circumstances. A backpack exemption form is available in the office or student services.
