The Boomer
Weatherford High School - Aug. 28-Sept. 1 - Vol. 2, Ed.1
Welcome Back Roos
As we enter the 2017-'18 school year, I want to take just a minute to let you all know just how excited I am about what’s in store for #RooNation.
We have as dedicated a staff as I have ever worked with in my seventeen years in education. During our in-service training, it has been fantastic watching our teachers plan and train to make sure #RooStudents get the very best education. I think I can speak for all of us here at WHS when I say that we are more than ready for Monday, August 28 when all our juniors and seniors come back, and we get to meet a whole new class of sophomores.
One of my personal goals this year is to take the time to enjoy each day and each person I meet. Every one of us makes a choice when we wake up, we can make it a Great Roo Day, or we can settle and let someone else decide how our day will be. I choose greatness, and I hope you will as well. You deserve it and so does everyone around you.
As you can tell by this letter I can be a bit of an over hashtagger, but I just cannot seem to help myself. #HaveAGreatRooDayOrNotTheChoiceIsYours #imin #RooNation #RooPride #itsaMOBthing #itdontmeanathingifyouainthopping #HoppingOurWayToGreatness
This is going to be the greatest year of our life, if we let it. Let’s commit to giving into greatness and working daily to make it a reality.

Class of 2018 Senior Picture Dates
LifeTouch/Prestige Portraits will be back on campus on September 6th and 7th to photograph seniors who were not photographed this summer. We will do our very best to remind students, but ultimately, it is their responsibility to be photographed on these dates. These photographs are used for the MelonVine yearbook and graduation newspaper announcements in May. We want all seniors included.
Got a question, please email Mrs. Gilley at sgilley@weatherfordisd.com or call 817-598-2858 ext. 3587 and leave a message. Thank you!

Cross Country On The Move
Weatherford High School competed in their first Cross Country last week and three runners came home with medals. Austin Christmas started the year off right by placing 7th in a strong varsity field. Sadie Tharp placed 3rd overall in the girls varsity division with Gina Limon not far behind placing 13th.
The Running Roos will run in the Marcus I Elite Invitational next Friday morning. Wish them luck!
Traditions of Weatherford High School
Why are we called the Kangaroos?
Weatherford High has been around for over 100 years. Legend has it that originally the teams of WHS were known as the "Melon Men" because Weatherford (or Parker County) was famed to be the watermelon capital (long before peaches were the thing!). There was a beloved coach at WHS early in the 1900's though, and when he decided to move on up to a college coaching position, the town/school wanted to honor him. So...they renamed the mascot to the Kangaroo, which was the mascot of the college where he went on to coach.
Why is the yearbook called the MelonVine?
The yearbook of Weatherford High has been around for decades. In fact, this year's staff will be creating the 104th volume (yes, number 104!). The MelonVine name again came from Weatherford's watermelon fame. For decades, the yearbook even had a MelonVine Queen!
Why is the student newspaper called the GrassBurr?
The GrassBurr (which is no longer published on paper, but instead is on online newspaper) has been around since the early 1920's. The GrassBurr tagline in the beginning was "The GrassBurr, The Paper With Many Points". There is another publication called the GrassBurr in Texas; it's Tarleton University's yearbook in existence since 1916. We are unclear as to whether our paper was named after Tarleton's. Do you believe it's a coincidence?
Why is the WHS weekly newsletter called The Boomer?
A former teacher, Leslee Cathey, began the WHS Newsletter last year under the leadership of former principal, Kristy Dowd. The newsletter had no clever title, so the journalism students decided that at least one publication should have a name that is related to the Kangaroo mascot. After a little research, it was decided to name the WHS newsletter "The Boomer". A boomer is the dominant male kangaroo in a mob (a group of kangaroos), and the very root word "BOOM" seems to lend a resounding effort to being heard and getting the word out.
WHS is rich in history and traditions, and now you know just a little bit more!
