Principally Speaking
Our week ended with an extraordinary guest speaker, Otis Amey, former record-setting S.F. 49ers wide receiver & punt returner who grew up in Union City, California. He spoke to all DCMS students about tough topics like bullying, drugs, low self-esteem, and the importance of positive friends. The students were engrossed in his message! He shared what his three dreams were from the age of 7. They were to play in the NFL, to have an ESPN highlight, and to buy his mom a home. He went on to talk about how real friends push you toward your dreams and do not pull you away from them. Below you will find a link to his ESPN highlight. Ask your student what he or she learned from the message today.
I also want to call your attention to the Area 31 Open House that is taking place on Thursday, January 30th, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. This is a fantastic opportunity to help your students learn what is available to them in terms of future opportunities. For students in 7th and 8th grades, sophomore and junior years seem far away. But a visit to Area 31 can help students find a purpose and focus on their futures. Check out the following link to see what is available to students at Area 31: https://area31careercenter.com/. See the graphic further below in the newsletter to learn more about the Open House opportunity.
Have an excellent weekend! It is a pleasure to serve you and your students.

An Itchy Topic: Head Lice
Per the school corporation policy, we are required to share our pediculosis policy with the public on an annual basis. We have also included general information for your reading pleasure.
The leading way head lice spread is from close, prolonged head-to-head contact. Head lice are crawling insects. They cannot jump, hop, or fly. There is a small chance that head lice will spread because of sharing items such as combs, brushes, and hats.
Many people have the impression that a person becomes infested with head lice because s/he is unclean. This is NOT TRUE. Frequent bathing neither prevents head lice nor eliminates the infestation.
Head lice are elongated insects and are greyish-white in color. They do not have wings, nor can they jump. They do move very quickly, which can make it difficult to find in a child's hair. Because they can be so hard to see, the diagnosis of head lice is made by examining the scalp for NITS. A nit is the louse egg. It is tear-shaped and varies in color from white to yellowish-brown. Head lice attach each nit to a hair shaft in a water-proof, cement-like substance. This means they cannot be washed or brushed out of the hair or scalp like dandruff and other such particles that sometimes look like nits to the naked eye. Clusters of nits may be found in any section of the hair, so a careful examination should be made of the entire scalp.
Attached is a sheet with information from the American Academy of Pediatrics about head lice and DCSC Pediculosis (head lice) Policy.

Nutrition Club
The Nutrition Club provides supplemental weekend food for children at North, South and the Middle School each Friday during the school year. We all struggle at some point. The goal of this program is to ease a bit of the struggle. You are welcome to sign-up at any point during the school year. The food will be sent home in a plastic bag that can fit inside a school backpack or be carried. You only complete one form per family. List all of your children that you would like to participate. Each child in your family will receive their own cinch sack or bag on Fridays throughout the school year. This program is the result of the generosity of the Danville community!
