Newsletter #15 - November 28, 2022

Dear Medina Families and Community,

We hope you all enjoyed a safe and joyous time this past weekend, at home or far away, and with large family gatherings or small. While Thanksgiving has come and gone, we continue to remember all that we are thankful for as we head into a very busy December. Sometimes it is easier to follow daily routines and habits to "get through" each day. Before we know it, it will be December 31st and we may wonder where all the time has gone. So, the challenge to all of us is this: make every day in December count. Every day is an opportunity to find joy, to learn something new, or to make that difference for someone.

We look forward to every day this week, especially the moments with your children. May you all have a great week too!

In partnership,

Kati & Betty

Book Fair is Coming: December 5-9!

The Scholastic book fair returns to Medina Elementary next week! This year, students will have time to shop with their class as well as with their family. Book fair brochures are online, and a paper copy will be sent home with your student. We suggest you preview the brochures to help your student plan their limited shopping time.

Please check with your child’s teacher for the classroom’s shopping day and time.

  • Family Shopping Night is Wednesday, December 7 from 5 - 7pm. Join us for Read-Alouds with Principals during this time as well!
  • If you’d like to give a gift to your child’s classroom, look for the Teacher Wish List tables, stocked with books the teachers would like to have in their classroom library.

BOOK FAIR IS CASHLESS

eWallet – not cash or check – is the payment method at the book fair for your child’s classroom shopping time. Please set up your child’s eWallet today so they are able to buy a book during their classroom shopping time! Set up and preload your student’s account with a fixed dollar amount using this link: https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/parent-how-it-works.html?fairID=5207498

Winter Weather Reminder

As winter weather sets in, please be sure to send your child to school with weather-ready clothing- raincoat, hat/hood, rain boots. Washington rain season has arrived! While we do have a covered play area, we have found that many students feel compelled to brave the elements and run through the puddles and play in uncovered areas. Should there be days where the weather continues to have a heavy pour, we will adjust as needed for an alternative recess space. As such, thank you for sending your child to school with warm rain jackets and weather-sturdy shoes.

Lost and Found

The Lost and Found is overflowing with jackets, lunchboxes, water bottles, and other items. Please remind your children to check the coat rack area located outside the lunch hallway if they may have lost an item. Unclaimed items will be donated to the One Warm Coat Drive on Wednesday, January 4th.

Attendance Matters

With winter break approaching, we'd like to remind you of the process of notifying the school for a pre-arranged absence. Each student in the Bellevue School District can have up to 5 Pre-Arranged absence days per year, which are excused. Parents may use these, for example, for extra-curricular sports, family events, private school interviews, or extended weekends or breaks. For a one-day absence, we ask that you email medinaattendance@bsd405.org or call 425-456-5401.

If a student will be absent for 2 or more days, parents are required to fill out a Pre-arranged Absence form. Please submit the completed form a week BEFORE the absence. Download and fill out the Pre-arranged Absence form and email it to medinaattendance@bsd405.org or have your student pick up a paper copy from the main office. This form can also be found on the Medina Elementary School website under "Report an Absence.” Thank you for including your child’s full name when emailing for any attendance related matters.
