No School Friday, April 2nd - Observation of Good Friday
Week One - Term 4: March 29 - April 1
Welcome back!
We hope you all had a restful, healthy and safe Spring Break! We have a very busy nine weeks ahead of us and want to be sure you have all of the information you need to have a successful end to this unique year!
Please remember that ALL students (A-Z) will be returning to the building tomorrow! This does not include ConnectOR students, as they will remain virtual for the remainder of the school year. JMS will continue to help mitigate Covid-19 and other illness transmission for our students and staff. It is very important that if your child has any symptoms, (headaches, runny nose, cough, temperature, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, etc.) that you PLEASE KEEP THEM HOME. You can find the entire Return to School plan at the end of the of this newsletter.
Please be sure that you read the newsletter in its entirety as it contains important information about Covid protocols, TN Ready Testing, 2021 Elective information, Summer Bridge Camp, 8th Grade ORHS Registration Information, Early Childhood Education Applications for ORHS, yearbook purchase and much more!
When you are dropping your child off each morning, please utilize the Bus Loop (near the cafeteria/softball field) after 7:10am (when no buses are present) to drop off your child. Please be sure your student is ready to exit the vehicle, so traffic is not held up. JMS Administration will be working to wave you to the very front, so we can always keep traffic off Fairbanks Road. At dismissal, you can use both loops, as buses exit the loop no later than 2:46pm each day. This will also expedite the pickup process at the end of the day.
Also, just a reminder that there is no school this Friday due to Good Friday Holiday.
As always, the health and safety of our students and staff will remain our number one priority. Please feel free to reach out to our admin team if you have any questions concerning the contents of this newsletter.
Have a great week!

Dress Code Reminder!
Spring is here and we want to remind our students and parents about the dress code at Jefferson Middle School.
The Board of Education and our administrative team believes that appropriate dress and grooming contribute to a productive learning environment. We expect students to give proper attention to personal cleanliness and to wear suitable clothing. Students are asked to wear simple, comfortable clothing that is clean and neat. Shoes should be worn at all times. Students are not to wear clothing which compromises safety or modesty; nor clothing which is disruptive to the educational process.
Students are prohibited from wearing:
- Clothing or accessories which by reasonable judgment is considered unsafe, dangerous or a health hazard (examples include, but are not limited to: wallet chains; spiked collars, necklaces or rings with spikes or sharp edges; oversized belt buckles; picks and combs).
- Students are not permitted to wear pants or shorts with holes above the knee. This includes wearing any type of shorts or leggings underneath ripped attire.
- Clothing or accessories which contain or suggest offensive or obscene symbols, signs, slogans or words degrading any gender, cultural, religious or ethnic values.
- Clothing or accessories which contain or suggest language or symbols oriented toward violence, vandalism, sex, drugs, alcohol or tobacco.
- Clothing that resembles sleepwear such as lounging pants, or other lounging items. This also includes house shoes.
- Skirts and dresses that are inappropriate for bending, sitting, standing and reaching,
- Attire that is disruptive to the instructional process which may be inclusive of, but not limited to: bare midriffs; halter tops; short shorts; tight, see through, or revealing clothing; or clothing which allows underwear to be exposed, (examples include, but are not limited to: sagging pants, tank tops, spaghetti strap tops, muscle shirts, etc.
- A belt is mandatory if pants or shorts will not stay at the waist without one.
- Mid-thigh is the appropriate length for shorts, skirts, and dresses.
- Mid-thigh length top is appropriate for covering leggings.
- Hats, hoods, head coverings, athletic headbands not worn during athletic event, bandanas and sunglasses are not to be worn inside the school building.
- Any articles which can be related to gang activity such as: items with gang names; gang initials; or individual gang member monikers; gang related jewelry; gang related tattoos; or self-inflicted scars. This may include such items as shoe laces, belt buckles, hats or tattoos. (TCA 49-6- 4215
- All students must wear shoes. It is strongly suggested that students wear shoes which either enclose the foot or are secured with heel straps.
- Coats, jackets and blankets must be removed upon arrival at school, be placed in lockers until the student leaves the building.
Consequences for violations of the dress code guidelines will follow the ORS District Disciplinary Code.
Updated Technology Help Desk Hours
Choose Your 2021-22 Electives by March 31st!
The window to select electives will stay open until March 31st! Be sure to follow the directions below! We know there were some issues with Skyward so please reach out if you are having difficulties.
Starting April 1, we will start contacting parents and students who have not selected to help get those electives chosen. So, what are our steps?
Please see steps below:
- 1st - READ the grade level curriculum guides.
- 2nd – WATCH the brief overviews by the grade level counselors and teachers. They will explain what rotational classes you will take, and what options you have a choice in.
- 3rd – DISCUSS what classes fit their interests, academic goals, future career goals, and just seem fun.
By March 31st, please complete the following steps:
- 1st – Students log into Skyward, click on Schedule and select electives (ONE for rising 6th graders and TWO for rising 7th and 8th graders). Rising 5th graders (current 4th graders) will select their electives in the fall after they get to JMS.
- 2nd – Students select ALTERNATIVE courses in Skyward. If for some reason the course does not work in their schedule, students should choose TWO elective courses they are also interested in. There are over 12 electives for 7th and 8th graders to choose from, so their alternative choices are important.
So, watch the videos for your grade level, read the guides, have the conversations, and over the next three and a half weeks, discuss what options work best. Be sure your student makes their choice by March 31st ! Counselors will be reaching out the week of March 28 through PE to help students make selections if they are struggling.

JMS Lego League Excels at Virtual Competition!
On March 6, 2021, Jefferson Middle School FIRST Lego League team, the Atomic Master Brix, competed virtually in the East Tennessee FIRST Lego League Remote Event.
The Atomic Master Brix received the 1st Place Champions Award. This award celebrates a team that embodies the FIRST LEGO League Challenge experience, by fully embracing the Core Values while achieving excellence and innovation in Robot Performance, Robot Design and the Innovation Project recognizes The Atomic Master Brix also won the 3rd Place Robot Performance Award. This award celebrates a team that scores the most points during the Robot Game. Teams have a chance to compete in at least three 2.5-minute matches and their highest score counts.
Our youth mentors, Amelie Nagle and Alex Shanafield, from the Oak Ridge High School FIRST Robotics Team, the Secret City Wildbots, received the Coach/Mentor Award. This award goes to the coach or mentor whose leadership and guidance is clearly evident and best exemplifies the FIRST Core Values.
Due to COVID, there is not an opportunity to move onto future events. However, Jefferson Middle School is excited to continue our FIRST Lego League program next season. We want to thank our sponsors for their support of this great STEM program: Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation, UT Battelle, and Leidos.
Reminder to 7th Graders - Naka-shi Virtual Student Exchange Applications!
Five JMS students will be selected to represent the Oak Ridge Schools and the City of Oak Ridge as participants in the 31st Anniversary Naka-shi Student Exchange Program. This year will be a virtual exchange. Selected students along with chaperones will learn about Japan and the Japanese culture.
Since it is an exchange program, the same students and chaperones who are selected will partner with a student from Naka. The Virtual Exchange between participants will occur in June.
Applications for the Naka-Shi Student Exchange Program along with the parent permission and questionnaire forms are now available and may be picked up in the guidance department. Once the completed applications are in, the student interviews with the selection committee will begin.
Completed forms must be returned to the guidance office by Monday, April 5th, so interested 7th graders should pick up the forms. You can also download the form below. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mr. John Smith at jrsmith@ortn.edu.
In addition, please see photo to the left! This quilt was the gift we reciprocated after our friends in Naka Shi, Japan sent us hand made masks! The quilt is displayed in Naka’s city hall! Wonderful job!
