4th Grade News
January 4, 2018
Hello 2018!
New Year - New You!
A time to look back and look forward - We are almost at the half way point of our school year. A time to think about how much each student has grown as well as to look ahead and make goals to meet by the end of the school year.
Some thoughts about goals:
- Math facts - how much as your child progressed through all 4 operations? How can you help your child achieve mastery of all 4 operations?
- Reading - how many actual books has your child read since the beginning of the school year? What type of books has your child read? Are the books helping to move your child forward in his/her reading ability? Suggestions of books was in the last newsletter. Here is the link.
- Has your child set aside time to work on Tenmarks? This program is currently an FCPS paid program - Has your child improved his/her scores on the assignments?
- Has your child set aside time to read from Newsela? This is another program paid by FCPS. - Just as you read the paper (whether printed or online) this program includes new, relevant articles each day of the work week. It is a good way to set habits early to read and keep up with current news.

- Students will use addition and subtraction to solve multi-step (at least 3 steps) word problems and write equations to represent the unknown quantity. (OA.A.3)
Math Facts
Has your child shown mastery of any math facts yet? How many levels has your child completed? Has (s)he earned the addition or subtraction triangle for the class quilt?
Get those math facts moving- make flash cards, download an app, play a math fact car game - students who know their math facts can concentrate more on math concepts and problem solving. Make a goal and work toward achieving that goal regarding math facts.
Language Arts
We have moved from nonfiction text back to literary text with the return to school this week, focusing on which point of view a story has been narrated.
- Compare and contrast the point of view from which different stories are narrated, including the difference between first and third person narrations.
Ask your child about which pronouns represent first and third person point of view as well as which point of view includes the narrator as a character within the story and which point of view the narrator is not part of the story.
We will continue our literary focus in the coming weeks with reading various Greek Myths - more to come about this.
Science/Social Studies
Newsela
Give it a try - it's a great way to maintain their reading strategies when they are home sick or on a snow day/delay as well as the weekend.
Ten Marks / Common Core
Has your child accessed his/her account lately?
This is another great way to maintain your child's math skills when home sick or on a snow day/delay or the weekend.
Parents can also create a parent account in order to be able to see how their child is doing. Ask you child's teacher if you need more information regarding how to create the parent account.
