SECA Newsletter

November 2021

Hello SECA Students and Parents,

I can hardly believe it is already November and the end of the semester is just around the corner. I want to thank you parents, for working with us as we navigate the logistics of closing out this first semester back with our students. There have been a number of considerations as we transitioned students back to campus. As we near the second half of this semester it is more important than ever that we support our students' success. Visit with your student to gauge their progress. How are they doing socially, emotionally and academically? Check the Home Access Center. Ask them to share their LSC information with you. What does their D2L say about grades/progress? There is still time for students to complete work, bring up their grades and finish the semester strong. But we need to know where and how we can support them.

Class of 2022 Parents - Join us for our Town Hall Wednesday November 10 - All Things College: The Application Process and Beyond to hear how you can support your senior through this year and the application process and transition.

Recruitment for the Class of 2026 opens soon. Please encourage any students currently in 8th grade to join our recruitment meetings and open house efforts to get more information on the application process!

Finally, please join me on Friday November 12 for our November Virtual Coffee with the Principal from 8:30am-9:30am. We will discuss closing out the semester, testing (EOC, TSI and G/T), exams and course selection questions. Hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

KGuidry

New TASFA/FASFA Graduation Requirement

Parents/Guardians of 12th-Grade Students:

The purpose of this letter is to remind you of a new graduation requirement that will go into effect beginning with the Class of 2022.

As a result of House Bill 3, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) adopted the graduation requirement for all students to complete and submit either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA).

TEA has allowed for three exceptions to this graduation requirement:

  1. The student’s parent or other person standing in parental relation submits a signed form indicating that they authorize the student to decline to complete and submit the financial aid application;

  2. The student signs and submits the FAFSA opt-out form on the student’s own behalf, if the student is 18 years of age or older or the student’s disabilities of minority (student emancipation) have been removed for general purposes under Chapter 31, Family Code, or;

  3. A school counselor authorizes the student to decline to complete and submit the financial aid application for good cause, as determined by the school counselor.

Annually, the financial aid cycle opens Oct. 1 of a student’s senior year, and the state priority deadline to submit the FAFSA or TASFA is Jan. 15 of a student’s senior year. Spring ISD will provide hands-on application workshops throughout the school year to assist students and families with the FAFSA and TASFA applications.

To fulfill this graduation requirement, the student must log into Naviance and upload either the mandatory TEA waiver or a Student Aid Report (SAR) to show an application was submitted.

For additional information, please contact your campus college counselor.
