- Wink News story featured GED and Phlebotmy graduate Adiacell Velazquez Reyes and her success coach Dr. Leo Mediavilla
As we bring this school year to a close, we say good-bye to LWTC/LWTHS staff who are retiring and moving on to the next chapter in their lives:
- Pat Metcalf will be retiring after dedicating more than 32 years in education. Pat’s career started in Career and Technical Education (CTE) as a Home Economics teacher. Along the way she became an Early Childhood Education teacher, Language Arts teacher, Reading Coach and ending as an Instructional Coach back in CTE. Much of the success of LWTHS maintaining its “A” status can be attributed to the foundation which Pat laid in working with teachers and students. Although she only spent a year at LWTC, the values and knowledge that she has imparted on our new teachers will never retire. We will continue to build on them. Thank you for everything you have done for us!
- Juan Romero, (written by Mary Ann O'Brien) The end of this school year has been very different for me. After nine years of working side by side in the Spanish department with my dear friend and colleague Juan Romero, approaching his departure has not been easy. After a successful teaching career of more than 30 years, Juan has decided to start a new stage in his life in which, rest assured, he will continue impacting the lives of many others triumphantly. Juan is an exceptional person both professionally and personally. Year after year, his cheerful spirit and words of wisdom have planted the seeds of knowledge on his students. During his time at Lorenzo Walker, Juan has shared his passion for teaching the Spanish language and prepared many of our students for the AP Spanish Language exam with extraordinary success. Very competitive in nature, Juan has also been the organizer and sponsor of the chess club since the beginning. They have competed in multiple district-level competitions and won first place on several occasions. Furthermore, Juan actively participated in many of the sporting events that have been hosted on our campus over the years. Juan, words cannot express my gratitude and admiration for everything you have done for the students of Lorenzo Walker Technical High School. On behalf of all our students and staff, we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors! ¡Hasta la vista amigo! You will be missed!
- Joann Cassio, AKA “Mama Cassio” is one of the original teachers of Lorenzo Walker Technical High School. During her time at the school, she became one of its biggest cheerleaders and helped build traditions such as Powder Puff, Prom Expo and the annual 12th grade picture at the Lely Resort which continue to this day. She had endless energy and contributed by serving as sponsor for the Senior Class, NHS and was Department Chair. Our campus will never be the same without Joann.
- Susan Resatar came to teaching after having retired from her previous job in the field of cosmetology. During her time at Lorenzo Walker, she made a difference in the lives of students by providing guidance and encouragement that have helped so many students thrive in the cosmetology field. Susan did a great job preparing our students to take the State of Florida Cosmetology exam. Wish her the best in her next step.
- Jerry Soffin retired to Naples after selling his successful business in Michigan. However, he couldn’t sit still for long and shortly thereafter found his way to LWTC. He used his expertise to make contributions to the operation of the Automotive Service Technology program. In addition to serving as the production shop assistant in the Automotive Service Technology program, Jerry helped out the entire Transportation Department when and where needed. Good luck to you on your next chapter.
All of these individuals have spent countless hours influencing students on our campus as well as beyond the classroom walls. They have poured their hearts and souls into making a difference by not only encouraging students to excel in their field but also to be good citizens and encouraging them to give back to the community. In the words of Henry Adam’s, “They have affected eternity, and they can never tell where their influence stops.” All will be greatly missed but we know that they, like us, have to keep moving forward.” Hopefully, in one way or another they keep their connections to LWTC/LWTHS. Please be sure to stop by the end of year celebration on Friday 6/2 at 11:30 a.m. and wish them well. The Sunshine Club has planned a Caribbean Party with food being catered by World Bakery.
