Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year!

I feel that it is your child's best interest that we keep a positive parent-teacher-student communication relationship in order for your son/daughter to be successful. I'm so excited to be a part of a great 7th grade TEAM with Mr. Furey, Mrs. Robertson, Mrs. Goff, Mrs. Rock, and Mr. Bernardi. This blog will keep parents informed of important events, due dates, math help, login information, notes from the teacher, and other pertinent information. This blog will be sent out to parents via email on Friday's. Please make sure that your email is up to date with the school office. I'm looking forward to a wonderful new school year!

About Your Math Teacher

My name is Kristy Chiano. I am originally from Swartz Creek and was taught 7th grade in the same exact room I am teaching in! This is my 7th year teaching. My first 5 years were with Flushing Community Schools. I'm endorsed in Mathematics (6-8 grades) and have a masters in Educational Technology. Both degrees are from CMU. Fire Up Chips! I have two beautiful girls, Ava Lynn (4 years old) and Lexi Kara (2 years). This summer, my girls and myself have traveled to Mackinaw Island, Crystal Lake, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, our cabin on Higgins Lake, and Splash Village. I'm excited and eager to start a new school year with the Other People Matter mindset that SCMS has endorsed with the Positivity Project. It's vital that we establish positive and empathetic, relationships amongst our peers, staff, parents, and family and friends in order to develop empathetic, caring and kind citizens of our community.

Portfolio Sheet/Learning Target Connections Sheet

Below are documents that I have created for students to be successful in math. Students are required to take ownership of their learning and part of their CREEK Expectations grade is keeping track of their own grades and keeping all assignments/packets, and assessments in one spot. After each chapter, on test day, portfolio's are due with all the papers attached to it, in order, and with a parent signature. I will send out a Remind the night before a Portfolio is due. I also perform random portfolio checks. I will be checking to make sure students are keeping track of their grades on a daily basis. If students are absent, they are still held responsible for turning their work in on time and tracking their grade on absent/missing/late assignments. This helps prepare students for the high school and staying organized. :)

On the back of their Portfolio Sheet is a Learning Targets Connections Page. This sheet relates each lessons skill to the previous one and why it's important to know this skill in a real-life situation. We discuss the connections of these skills everyday. Ask to see these sheets from your child on a weekly basis.

Integer Rules for both Regular and Advanced Math

These Integer Rules are being implemented to your son/daughter the first few weeks of school. They need to be mastered by the end of the school year because they will be popping up throughout the rest of the chapters and their mathematical career. Please review these Integer Rules with your son/daughter on a weekly basis. Mastery is required!!!!!!!
