A Note from Ms. Deal

Dear Parents,

We continue to work hard and have fun in 4th grade. The students were especially excited to welcome our new student, Zeynep. Zeynep is from Turkey and will be a wonderful addition to our classroom community.

Please note that on September 23rd we will be going on a field trip to Sprout Lifestyle from 11:00am-1:30pm. The members of this team have created an authentic lesson to help our 4th graders learn more about nutrients. The permission form went home today and is due on September 16th. If you have interested in joining us, please let me know. I am looking for one parent to ride the bus with us that day. :)

P.E. next week will be on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Swimming is finished for the quarter. No swimming. :)

I was very proud of the Me Cubes. Each student added their own style to make these projects truly special. Well done, 4th graders!

Thank you and enjoy your weekend,

Ms. Deal

What's going on in room 223

Math Maniacs

This week the 4th graders reviewed their knowledge of place value. Students practiced writing, speaking and manipulating large numbers through games, independent practice and group work. We finished the week with Who Am I posters. Students had to choose and 6 or 7 digit number and provide clues for their classmates to correctly guess their number. This is a game you can play with your child at home to double check their knowledge of place value. Next week, we will move on the rounding these large numbers to the appropriate place value. Please continue to practice multiplication facts at home with your child. The more practice with fact fluency they have, the better!

Language Arts

Word Study: Students focused on nutrient vocabulary this week to help them better understand the words in their current unit of inquiry, Nutrients.

Writing: This week the 4th graders continued to study Explanation writing. In addition, they also discussed verbs. We decided as a class to cut out a few verbs that were "boring" and incorporate more "vivid verbs" to our writing.

Reading: This week the students continued to enjoy their "good fit" books. A good fit book is a book that is on their reading level, interests them and is a book they will read from cover to cover. Thank you for the support with 20 minutes of reading at home each night.

Science Rules!

The 4th graders continue their exploration of nutrients. This week students broke off into groups and became "experts" on a nutrient that interested them. They did research and presented their findings to the class. We also explored some interesting TED Talks on calories, too much sugar, and the 6 essential nutrients.
