Facilities update
A message from the Board of Directors | August 18, 2022
Dear GLOBE community,
Congratulations to all on the start of a new school year! To our new families — bienvenidos, bienvenue, and huānyíng — welcome to GLOBE!
In case you missed it or are new to the GLOBE community, the Board of Directors has been working on strategies for short-term improvements to the aging Lower Campus facility and HVAC system.
We are thrilled to share that our new Director of Operations, Cortney Flowers, worked with her team over the summer to ensure the buildings are clean, safe, and comfortable for our students this year.
Among many other projects, their work included the following:
· Deep cleaning all classrooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, and common areas
· Scrubbing, stripping, and refinishing all floors
· Deep cleaning, shampooing, and vacuuming all carpets
· Thoroughly cleaning all walls, windows, and doors
· Cleaning ceiling tiles and replacing them as necessary
· Installing a new window AC unit in a Lower Campus classroom with a failing overhead unit
We also engaged third-party experts to perform an air quality assessment to ensure Lower Campus’s moisture problems were under control. The outside sample collected had a higher spore count than the interior sample; as a result, the experts determined our facility was healthy to inhabit without any further remediation.
Going forward, the operations team will perform site assessments at regular intervals, as well as investigate any areas reported to them. During routine maintenance, they will inspect HVAC systems for mold and/or moisture problems that could contribute to mold growth; and they will test for and evaluate potential poor IAQ factors such as high humidity, low airflow, water leaks, maintenance issues, HVAC problems, or condensation issues. They will work closely with all stakeholders and contractors to maintain the facility’s low humidity level.
Now for the exciting part: Our Master Facilities Planning process has begun, so we can make progress on a permanent home for The GLOBE Academy. We have retained an MFP project management company, BDR Partners, to support us in beginning this endeavor. BDR Partners will provide us with a Capital Campaign Package that lays out construction options for us to consider, with respect to the scope of work, timing, phasing, and costs. They will also provide us with best practices on engaging our community in this process. We are eager for your input and insight!
The initial phase of the MFP is due to be complete by the end of this month and will be presented at our Board of Directors meeting on August 29. As always, we invite you to join us. Once we have clarity on timing and next steps, we will begin establishing a more formal MFP committee. Until then, we will continue to keep you informed via email and at our regularly scheduled Board of Directors meetings.
Thank you for being a part of the GLOBE community. We’re looking forward to a great year — and an exciting future — together.
Sincerely,
Drew Reynolds, Board Chair
Lillian Norton, Vice Chair
