Principal Smith's Weekly Update
Week of April 21, 2024
Happy Sunday CPJMA Families!
Hope that each of you had a great weekend! Wanted to remind you that this Friday, April 26, is a MINIMUM DAY, 12:15 dismissal for ALL CPJMA Students.
Yesterday many of our CPJMA students performed in the Treasure Island Missoula Theater Musical/Play. My son and I attended this amazing performance in our school auditorium. Our students did an exceptional job acting and singing in the musical! I am so proud of our kids for their hard work and stamina throughout the week with rehearsals, and on the day of the performance. Bravo to our students! Special thank you to Laura McDougal for your leadership with coordinating and overseeing Missoula Theater, being there each day during rehearsals and the day of the event to support our kids; the event was such a huge success! Huge thank you to Kari Robinson and family for hosting the cast in their beautiful home, and for your support at the rehearsals during the week and on the day of the performance. Huge thank you to both Carlee Mendlik, and Jill and AJ Bowmik for all of your hard work & support during the week, as well and on the day of the performance. Thank you AJ for your amazing musical talents with playing the piano for the musical, and your support with Missoula Theater. Thank you to all parents that supported the event by attending, helping out during the rehearsals (I apologize if I did not include your name/s by mistake), and donating snacks and food during rehearsals and on the day of the event.

REMINDERS-
SDUSD Head Lice Protocol:
SDUSD schools are no longer permitted to do whole class head lice checks in the health office. When our health office is made aware about a lice case in a classroom, our health office provides the classroom teacher with copies of a document concerning information about lice (a lice fact sheet) to give to the parents of all students in the classroom. Sending home the lice fact sheet to all parents in a classroom is an added measure that we do at CPJMA, as providing this sheet or any form of communication to all students in a class that has a case of head lice is no longer part of the district protocol. I have attached two district documents concerning head lice. Under our district's lice policy, the school (Principal Smith, and/or our health office staff) are not permitted to send notices to parents about cases of head lice in the classroom or school.
As a parent, I know that it is frustrating. I have attached our district policy regarding head lice, and a head lice fact sheet. For questions about lice procedures, please call our school office to speak with our school nurse and/or health tech as they will be able to best answer your questions concerning SDUSD's head lice protocol.
Thank you to ALL CPJMA Parents for everything that you do to support our students, staff, and school community! We are incredibly grateful for each of you and your kiddos!
In Gratitude,
Sakeenah

Additional Minimum Days for CPJMA this School Year
CPJMA will continue to have every Wednesday as our minimum day each week (12:15 dismissal). In addition, the following days below have been approved by our district as additional minimum days this school year for CPJMA:
Volunteering on Campus
We are in great need of parent volunteers during our lunch recess blocks, specifically during our three lunch recess periods: UTK 11:20-11:40, K-2nd 12:00-12:20, 3rd-5th 12:25-12:45. If you are able to volunteer to supervise during a lunch recess period, please complete the volunteer form (see link below) and bring proof of a recent negative TB test.
Interested in volunteering in your child's classroom: Many of our teachers send information on options to volunteer in their classrooms usually sometime between the 3rd-6th week of school. In our lower grade classes, it is important to first build independence (at school) in our younger students, to allow them time to learn the classroom routines, structures, classroom environment, and teacher expectations, absent of the parents being in the classroom. Should you have any questions about volunteering in the your child's classroom, please reach out directly to your child's teacher regarding your questions.
*Parents that sign up with their child's teacher to chaperone at a field trip during the school year must have a current volunteer application on file, and provide proof of the results of a current TB test
SDUSD Volunteer Application: https://sdusdfamilies.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Volunteer-Application-2021-2022-.pdf
*You may also pop by the school office and pick up a volunteer form in the office lobby.

***Please email Della our school ESA with questions about your volunteer form: aducharme@sandi.net
REMINDER - PLEASE READ BELOW FOR UPDATED INFORMATION REGARDING INDEPENDENT STUDY CONTRACTS:
If your child will be out of school for more than 5 days, please notify your child's teacher in writing if you would like an independent study contract prepared for your child. After the teacher has given you the okay regarding your request, you would then contact Ms. Nolte in the school office to ask for the independent study contract paperwork. It is ultimately the parent/guardian's responsibility to obtain the independent study contract paperwork from Ms. Nolte in our school office, (after parent has received approval from the teacher about the request). Requests for independent study contracts must be made with your child's teacher at least two weeks in advance. The independent study contract is an agreement between the parent and teacher, providing the student with relevant classwork to complete during the time that the student is out of town. The parent must provide written notification to the teacher with the request to receive an independent study contract, this written request must be provided no less than two weeks in advance. This will allow the teacher to get the contract and assignments ready for your child. If the written notification is not provided to the teacher in at least two weeks advance of your travel date, the independent study contract will not be accepted.
REMINDER: After you speak with your child's teacher regarding your request for an independent study contract, you must then contact Ms. Nolte in our school office for the independent study contract paperwork - this is the parent/guardian's responsibility. Requests for independent study contracts must be made with your child's teacher at least two weeks in advance.
Thank you for your support with this :).
IMPORTANT: Arrival & Dismissal Reminders
·
ARRIVAL (Morning Drop-Off)
ALL CPJMA students will enter the school through the cafeteria exterior doors located on Pacific Beach Drive. The cafeteria doors will close at 7:40 a.m. sharp. Students that arrive after 7:40 will need to enter through the front of the school gate located on Ingraham.
On the first day of school, parents may walk students directly to their classrooms. After the first day of school, parents may walk students directly to the blacktop each morning and MUST QUICKLY EXIT the campus when the teachers arrive at the blacktop at 7:37/7:40, as we will need to close and lock the cafeteria doors to secure our campus, and to allow for our teachers to begin their day with classes. Please do not congregate with other parents at this time, please exit the school promptly after the students are picked up by their teachers on the blacktop
DISMISSAL (Afternoon Pick-Up)
- UTK - All UTK students will be dismissed out of their classrooms. A UTK staff member will open and remain at the UTK playground gate (green gate) located on Fortuna, and UTK parents may walk directly to the UTK classroom doors to pick up their child. (Older student siblings can be picked up here if the parent has made this prior arrangement with both teachers)
- Kindergarten & 1st grade students (and older student siblings if the parent has made this prior arrangement with both teachers) will dismiss from the gate area located on Fortuna, directly next to the UTK gate.
- 2nd - 5th grade students will dismiss from the cafeteria exterior doors located on Pacific Beach Drive.
Arrival/Dismissal Safety:
In order to facilitate safety and efficiency with our morning drop off and pick up process, we need your help parents. Please be safe and efficient when dropping your child off. When you pull onto the side of the curb/side of the street closest to the arrival/dismissal entry point, we need you to move your car ALL THE WAY FORWARD and QUICKLY drop off or pick up your child. Please try your best to stay in your car (if you are not walking your child onto campus). It is important that we keep traffic moving along. The school police officer assigned to our cluster is not able to support us with traffic duty, as he supports all five of the schools in the Mission Bay Cluster, and is mainly at Mission Bay High School. Please do not double park. Please do not park in the middle of the street. In addition, if your car is parked at the curb while you are actively sitting in it, I will ask you to let your child out of the car so that we can keep traffic flowing in an effort to not back up Pacific Beach Drive. In addition, I am asking all parents to not permit nor encourage your child to walk/or run across the north side of PB Drive without using the crosswalk. Please use the crosswalk with your child. This is extremely important. Please practice safety by using the crosswalk, rather than running/walking across the street/and or allowing your child to run across the street as that is NOT SAFE. Please demonstrate safety, common sense, and patience when dropping your child off at school and picking them up from school. If you are able to help our school with traffic control during morning arrival or afternoon dismissal (by volunteering your time to direct cars to move forward/supporting the flow of traffic, signaling, etc.), please email Principal Smith (me) at ssmith10@sandi.net. Thank you tons!

School Communication:
Teacher Communication: Please ensure that you connect with your child’s teacher regarding their preferred method of parent communication (email, Class Dojo, weekly newsletters, etc.). It is imperative that you stay connected with your child’s teacher.
THE TEACHER-PARENT RELATIONSHIP is most critical to the growth and success in your child's educational journey.

PTO: We have an extremely amazing, active, and supportive Parent Teacher Organization. Our PTO parents have done so much to support our students and staff! I encourage all parents to get involved with our school by supporting our PTO, and consider being on the PTO, and/or helping with PTO fundraising events, as the funds that our PTO raise go directly into the school to create the BEST OPPORTUNITIES for our students (art experiences, science experiences, whole child experiences, field trips, supplies/resources for our teachers, theater/drama programs, supporting with our music/violin programs, celebrations for our students and staff, and extra-curricular events/activities for our students).
