North Warren After-School
A Word from the Supervisor
I hope you are a having a great month! Weather permitting, we will be outside a lot more as the temperature starts to rise. As I am sure most of you are aware, Mr. Blake is no longer working with us at North Warren. We will get a new employee soon, but until then we will continue to have a sub working with me daily. Thank you for all you do.

Insurance help available in case of accidents
Accidents do happen, and children are no exception to that. Sometimes a little one trips over her own feet on the playground and falls. Or maybe a child bumps into another one as he is running on the playground. We don’t like to see any child hurt! Although parents sign a waiver stating they understand they solely are responsible for any medical expenses, Community Education wishes to assist parents in such circumstances and annually purchases an accident insurance policy – the same used by most schools – to help defray the out-of-pocket costs on some medical visits due to accidental injury. The policy, which we upped to double coverage, realistically covers an amount that is similar to a co-pay. We do this as a convenience for our families. This policy is not intended to replace your normal health insurance policy, but is a supplement to it. We have noticed that some of the newer health insurance policies do not pay any or much at all, due to high deductibles, toward small injuries. Please double check your health insurance policy to determine how much you are willing to pay out of pocket in such a circumstance. If you need more information about this insurance and how it might benefit you, call the Community Education office. If your child has an accidental injury during our after-school or before-school program requiring medical treatment, please check with our office staff to determine how this policy can be used by your family (or be applied to their treatment expenses).
Hill's team wins Spellabration event
The Hill-Arious Spellerz team from Hill’s Pet Nutrition won the 11th annual Community Education Spellabration event Feb. 19 at the Sloan Convention Center, beating WBKO Television’s WBKObi-wan-Kenobees team in the final round of the Star Wars-themed event. The annual fundraiser, described as a party with an adult spelling bee in the middle, was sponsored by Hill's Pet Nutrition and Graves Gilbert Clinic. Tony Rose of WDNS-FM radio served as Master of Ceremonies and Alan Palmer was again the word reader in an event billed as “Spell Wars”.
The 11 teams and guests were treated to a variety of foods donated by local restaurants. They were able to browse and bid on dozens of silent auction items in this event that raises funds for Community Education’s school-age programs for children in the Bowling Green and Warren County school systems.
In addition to Hill’s and WBKO, other Spellabration winners were honored. Second runner-up went to the Spellbinders of Warren County Public Library, sponsored by Graves Gilbert Clinic. The Best Costume Award went to the spELPO team from the English, Lucas, Priest & Owsley law firm, the Best Table Decoration Award went to Lost River Cave, and the Most Spirited Award went to Warren County Public Library.
Spellabration Art Contest winners recognized
The five winners of the Spellabration 2016 Art Contest were recognized during the Spellabration event held Feb. 19 at the Sloan Convention Center. This year students were asked to submit artwork depicting animals or scenes from Kentucky Down Under. The winners of the art contest, which is sponsored by US Bank, will have their artwork printed on notecards that will be sold at Kentucky Down Under.
This year’s winners are Liz DeMarse, a Drakes Creek Middle School eighth grader; Bosco Tuyisenge, a Henry F. Moss Middle School eighth grader; Harley Wilson, a Lost River Elementary School sixth grader; Hayden Wolf, a North Warren Elementary School third grader; and Addison Rosado, a Jody Richards Elementary School first grader.
All winners had their artwork on display at Spellabration. The art was displayed for two weeks at the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce.
Early School Closing Policy Reminder
If your child’s school closes two or more hours early due to bad weather or other issues, Community Education will NOT provide care that day, as the majority of our staff attend classes at WKU and cannot get to the site that early. Full afternoon care will be provided if your child’s school closes less than two hours early.
