For Heaven's Sake
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School - March 2019
The Principal's Corner
As we move into spring we begin our Lenten journey toward Easter, our focus for our students will be to teach them that we need to really focus on the things that are most important in our lives. At the top of the list of course is our relationship with God. We are reminded by Bishop Provost that Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and alms giving. In a recent letter he wrote the following:
Every Catholic, to enter more deeply into the life of Christ, is to participate in some way in the spiritual and penitential disciplines of Lent. The regulations for the Catholic Church in the United States are as follows: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.
The obligation to abstain from meat binds Catholics 14 years of age and older. The obligation to fast, limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals during the day, binds Catholics from the age of 18 to 59. Those younger or older are encouraged to voluntarily embrace these disciplines in so far as they are able.
Divine and Natural Law holds that all the faithful are morally bound to do penance. The Fourth Precept of the Church obliges Catholics to observe the penance of fasting and abstinence for Lent.
Fridays outside of Lent are also days of penance and spiritual discipline. Abstaining from meat is the traditional way of observing these days of penance. The Bishops of the United States have granted permission for abstinence from meat on Fridays outside of Lent to be replaced with some other self-denial or personal penance. However, Friday remains a day of some penitential practice. As Bishop Provost stated in a recent pastoral letter: “The idea of sacrificing something is countercultural to the ‘throwaway’ mentality that plagues us today and of which Pope Francis has time and again warned us” (September 3, 2015).
Fasting should never endanger one’s health. Avoiding some form of permissible entertainment or performing sacrificial acts of charity, for example, could replace the fasting when health is a consideration.
Finally, with any penitential discipline, both the letter and the spirit are to be maintained. For example, replacing meat with a gourmet seafood meal is not in keeping with penitential practice. Also, the increasingly popular practice of hosting “crawfish boils” and entertainments on Good Friday is highly inappropriate. Good Friday remains an extraordinary and solemn day on which we recall the suffering and death of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Good Friday should remain a day of fasting, abstinence, prayer, penance, and interior and exterior quiet.

Exciting A.R. News from 5th Grade!
- Woohoo! Aidan Ritchie, Branson Savoy, and Alexandra Steeneveldt have each earned over 100 points in AR this year! Many other fifth graders are close! Keep on reading!
- WOW! One of our fifth grade students has maintained 100% comprehension in AR throughout the school year! That means every test she took, she scored 100%! Congratulations to Reese Dufrene for this amazing accomplishment!
- We have two "Millionaires" in 5th grade! Congratulations to Alexandra Steeneveldt and Branson Savoy for each reading 1,000,000 words this year! They each received $10 from Mrs. Bushnell to spend at the OLQHS Book Fair! A few others will reach this goal soon!
Science Fun!
Morgan Churchman posed as Mrs Fink for teacher of the day last Friday. She helped lead the classes through various lab stations learning about surface tension, solubility, magnetism , density and air pressure. She was a wonderful teacher and did a great job!
6th Grade
In Science, 6th graders learned how to classify living organisms using a taxonomic key. They practiced using a key with different types of candy!
They also went on their annual field trip to Zeus dressed as Greek gods and goddesses that they studied during their Greek Mythology unit.
The Art World
Well...I can not begin to tell you how busy Art Classes have been!
We have many new Artsonia Hall of Fame Students. In Kindergarten we have Kinley Leger, Finn Moore, Caroline Kramer, Christian Robichaux, Sofia Chan, William Braud, and Ava Lindsay. Our new First Grader is Ismael Arellano. In Second Grade we have Audrey Goss, Jon Mousset, Millie Tadlock, Roz Neas,Audrey Edens, Finlee Courville, Jackson Duplechin, Isla Clawson, and Chase Williams. Our new Third Graders are Maizie Link, Clare Knippa, Isaiah Kerr, Ali Williams, and Elwood Looney. Fourth Grade new members are Dayne Matt and Reece Campbell. Congratulations to you all!! Right now we have 83 Members of the Artsonia Hall of Fame. By the end of the year I would just love to have 100 or more. It is so easy. Your students needs at least 3 pictures uploaded (which I have done already), five or more people in their fan club, and five or more APPROVED comments. Help us achieve our goal!
I usually start with First Grade, but today I will go backwards and begin with our 8th Grade Fine Arts Survey Class. I would like to announce that our student's Illuminated Manuscripts will be on display in the Imperial Calcasieu Museum project on "Books" from March 8 through mid April. If you get a chance to go and see them please do. Let them know how proud you are of the great work they have created. 8th Graders have also been studying the History of Quilting and each student created their own nine patch square for a quilt that I will make. Each student selected teachers, administrators, and staff that they would like to see receive the quilt, as well as put their name in the pot for the drawing. The name will be drawn in a future gathering at the school. Good luck to all!
7th Grade Art Students have finished working on their Abstracts which are on display in the Fine Arts Building Hallway. Mr. Jay Bowdon has critiqued them on the Artsonia website and was very impressed with their work. The students are now working on an Optical Illusion with rulers, markers, and pencil colors.
Fourth Graders have just finished making their own original Mardi Gras masks. Check out their photos. We will now begin an Art History study on Pablo Picasso in preparation for making our "Picasso Portraits" in cray pas. Third Graders made their emotion Mardi Gras Masks (on display in the hall) and now will begin their "real drawing" of a bunny rabbit, for Easter.
Second Graders learned to make absolutely beautiful Mardi Gras Masks (see photos) for the Kindergarten Parade. They are now beginning their Easter Egg Place Mats in which they will learn to weave. They will decorate the 2nd Grade Hallway. First Graders have just finished their original Mardi Gras Mask designs and will now begin a faux stained glass window with a cross for Easter.
And our Kindergarteners have had a fabulous month, with the Kindergarten Parade (see photos). They have just finished drawing kitty cats in a backyard environment. We are now beginning to work on our "Cracked Easter Egg Families". I know that you can't wait to see that!
Remember we are busy creating, making messes, and having FUN!
Have a glorious Lenten and Easter season,

asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
