We are so proud of the dedication you have shown to your academics. Keep up the great work!
Spotlight on Literacy
Mt. Healthy City Schools will empower students to read & write universally, think critically, and communicate effectively.
Reading and Writing Universally
Prior to reading the short story, "The People Could Fly," Mrs. Starline's 7th grade classes took the time to preview some difficult vocabulary. Below you see the work of Melina Gonsalez Bernardo (top) and Lorenzo Walker (bottom). Each student generated predictions about what they thought each word meant, conducted a search for what the word actually means, and rated their understanding of each word. By previewing vocabulary in this way, Mrs. Starline has provided her students with the opportunity to own their own learning. Through this exercise, students were able to make themselves aware of which vocabulary words they needed practice with in order to better comprehend the text.
Communicating Effectively
Ms. Honeywell's 8th grade math students, Carlos De La Rosa, Dah'vier Barnes, Joshua Calai, and Coszaire Dewberry Jones (left to right), effectively communicated during their station work to reach a solution for each system of equation. By collaborating with one another, they were able to provide their own perspectives on how to best solve each system and come up with the correct solution.
Thinking Critically
During Advisory class, students were asked to use their critical thinking skills to devise a plan that would result in the tallest tower, using only the paper provided. Throughout the week, students had been exploring how to fail up instead of give up. Once teams began carrying out their plans and realized that some of their strategies were failing, they had to use teamwork, perseverance and their critical thinking skills to alter their strategies and learn from their mistakes. Below you see 8th grader, Breanne Shearer, failing up and producing the tallest tower in her class.
