FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School :: October 22, 2015
The FHS is a monthly on-line school newsletter. It will be emailed to you through School Reach. There will be weekly reminders of important events and activities that are planned for the upcoming week.
Dear Parents and Members of the OLQHS Community
We, the administration and faculty of OLQHS, are becoming increasingly aware of the effects social media is having on our students. While social media can be an amazing tool, it can also be a source of some awful things, including bullying and harassment. We are extremely concerned about our students. We are asking you, the parents and guardians of our students, to join efforts with us in becoming more proactive. The virtues and morals that we are trying to teach our young people should carry seamlessly between home and school. Are we, as teachers and parents, doing our job in guiding our children outside of our daily routines with them? Are we even aware that it is illegal for children under the age of 13 to have an account on most social media sites? Do we sit and read those words "Terms and Conditions" with our children before allowing them to check that little box saying they understand what they are getting themselves into? Do our children know how a text, picture, or post can change their life?
Our school has asked Father Jeff Starkovich to come speak to our 8th graders about social media and cyber-bullying on Wednesday, October 28th. We are also in conversation with the Attorney General to schedule another presentation, for both our parents and middle school students. Our school counselor has been working with our students on an individual, small group , and whole class level. We want every single one of our students to feel safe at home and at school. We want our kids to know that we have their very best interest at hand, and we want them to become positive and productive individuals.
OLQHS is blessed to have amazing students and supportive families! We appreciate any and all efforts in helping us identify and minimize any bullying and social media issues that we may have within our student population. Thank you for all that you do!
OLQHS is an incredible place to be!

Celebrating Monsignor DeBlanc's Birthday!
Every year on or near October 17th - chocolate candy bars are given to each student at OLQH School to celebrate Monsignor Irving DeBlanc's birthday. Monsignor was the Pastor of OLQH for 31 years and each year, on his birthday, he would come hand out candy to the students. It was his wish that this celebration would continue, long after his death, so he left funding for this specific event. It is a wonderful reminder for our students of the history of OLQH School! Thank you to the residents of Villa Maria for coming to deliver the candy this year!
New Family Fall Open House - Pre-K and Kindergarten
We are having a Fall Open House for prospective families on Tuesday, November 3rd at 8:30 am. Please pass along this information to any families you think may be interested in visiting OLQHS, meeting some of our parents, and taking a tour. We will still have our traditional Open House in January as well as individual tours by appointment throughout the year. Please contact Megan O'Quin for more information - moquin@olqhs.org.
The Year of Mercy
The Year of Mercy
The Jubilee of Mercy was announced by Pope Francis as a year to be lived intensely in each particular Church, allowing every person to encounter the mercy of God the Father through diligent labor for the Church's mission there. The most evident sign of this pastoral care is the chance to open a Door of Mercy in every diocese. These doors, analogous to the Holy Doors of the Papal Basilicas in Rome, will permit even people who cannot travel to Rome to make a Jubilee pilgrimage.
Doors of Mercy
It will be the responsibility of the local Ordinary to decide in which church of the diocese the Door of Mercy will be opened. There should be a Door of Mercy opened in every diocese and eparchy of the world (cfr. MV 3).
In addition to the Door of Mercy chosen for the diocese, the diocesan Ordinaries may also permit the opening of other Doors of Mercy at Shrines of particular importance, especially where there is the happy possibility that the many faithful who visit the shrine may always encounter the merciful embrace of the Father in confession (cfr. MV 3).
It is good for the extraordinary possibility for the Jubilee indulgence to be recognized by the faithful precisely as an opportunity out of the ordinary, so that they may live it as a time particularly fitting for embarking on the path of conversion. Fostering the proper appreciation for the special sign of the Door of Mercy will facilitate this invitation to conversion.

Why Teaching Spanish in Elementary School is Important?
When it comes to education, Elementary school-aged children process information in a variety of ways in order for it to make sense to them. They process information on levels that are different than adults and can be taught a variety of subjects. Learning to speak Spanish is no different as they will retain what they have learned with greater accuracy. Giving a child a head-start in today’s world by speaking Spanish can be beneficial in a number of ways.

Learning to speak Spanish at an early age can help a child succeed throughout his or her life. The student could develop a talent for linguistic skills that could benefit learning other languages later on. As speaking Spanish is growing to be an ever demanding skill, why not give the child the ability to keep up with an ever growing society?

Spanish Enrichment: El 26 - 30 de octubre, 2015. We will be honoring our relatives that have passed on by bringing a picture of them to class and information about their lives. Information could include their names, nicknames, hobbies, jobs, and traditions or activities that they have started or enjoyed during their time with the student or family. This is a joyous remembrance of how their lives affected us and developed our family heritages and traditions. Next week, students will be able to take turns during their Spanish class honoring their loved ones in observation of the Hispanic celebration of Dia de los Muertos or for us, All Souls Day. Please have them protect their precious photos by bringing them in an envelope or plastic bag with the student's names on them.
Gracias, Sra. Smith

Fast Start Rolls Out in September
Fast Start, an at-home parent –child reading routine for grades Pre K and Kindergarten is now underway at OLQHS. The program was developed by Timothy Rasinski, Ph. D. to improve early literacy, word recognition, comprehension, and fluency abilities. Fast Start is research based and has been proven to help make children successful readers. Poems and rhymes, coupled with activities to do with your child, make an excellent tool for parents looking to be involved with their child’s reading development.
OLQH uses several of the tools developed by Dr. Rasinski to include the 3-Minute Assessment for the monitoring of fluency and comprehension in the 1st and 2nd grades as well as Word Ladder vocabulary activities in grades 1 – 3.

6th Grade
The 6th grade SWAG club have been learning about words and how to use our words to lift people up instead of bring people down. We did a fun project that involved shaving cream. Each student sprayed shaving cream on their desk. They were asked to write different words in the shaving cream. We ended up with a big mess, but it was well worth the trouble.
Middle School
Seminarian Adam Richard visited the school on Friday, October 16th. He went to classes, attended mass with us, and gave his testimony on his journey to the priesthood. He also answered questions and gave them a homework assignment. Adam would like for all of us to pray for the seminarians and to pray to our Guardian Angel.

We also started off the year with TWO contests. The first contest was to pick the artwork for the school's Advent Card and the Fourth Grade classes competed for that honor. This year's winning art was created by Joanie Gallo and her angel design will appear on OLQH's Advent Card. The other winners were 2nd Place--Addie Lewis; 3rd Place--Gray Guillory; and Honorable Mention winners Gabby Dimitrov and Carter Kramer.
Our second contest was to select the four windows and that will be in our "on stage Abbey" in the Sound of Music. Mrs. Tanner and I coordinated a study of Respighi's Four Symphonic Impressions which featured the Archangel Michael, Pope Gregory, St. Clare, and the Flight from Egypt. The students in 8th Grade Art/Band/Chorus had to do a line drawing in one of these categories. These are our winners: Archangel Michael--First Place--Sophie Stine, Second Place--Gabriell Little, Third Place--Olivia Kilpatrick Pope Gregory--First Place--Maggie Bruchhaus, Second Place--Anne Helms, Third Place--Ava Garry St. Clare--First Place--Grace Ann Theriot, Second Place--Alivia Mudd, Third Place--Emma Fournerat Flight into Egypt--First Place--Jillian Sedano, Second Place--Sarah Richard, Third Place--Gabrielle Kuehn. All of the artwork of these talented young ladies will be on display during the production of Sound of Music. Congratulations to all!!
Parent's please go to the Artsonia website with your children and get familiar with the website. Starting in 4th Grade there are homework assignments online and you and your child need to know how to navigate the website. Please make comments on your child's artwork and encourage them to make comments on their own work. This will increase their ability to critique artwork and improve their writing skills. Besides, students love to get positive feedback on their artwork.
Remember, we are busy creating, making messes, and having FUN!

OLQHS is a Cell Phone Free Zone
Please when driving through carline; remember that school zones are cell phone free zones. The crossing guards as well as duty teachers have noticed that there are quite a few people who are on their cell phones while picking up their children. When the Louisiana legislature voted the cell phone free zones into law, I am sure they were concerned with the safety of the children of Louisiana.
ASBESTOS STATEMENT
EACH YEAR PARENTS MUST BE INFORMED THAT THE SCHOOL HAS COMPLIED WITH ALL NATIONAL STANDARDS REGARDING ASBESTOS ON CAMPUS. CERTAIN VINYL FLOORS AND THE PANELS THAT ARE BELOW THE QUAD WINDOWS WILL HAVE TO BE HANDLED APPROPRIATELY IF EVER REPLACED.
