NES Principaw Update #4 (Nov2023)
Mr. Vince Sette and Mrs. Nicole McQuate
Time is Flying By!
The first nine weeks have come and gone. Thanks for a great start to the year. We could not be as great as we are without your partnership. Report cards were sent home on Friday, November 3rd. If you did not receive one, please let the office know ASAP. We have seen a dip in temperatures over the past few weeks and ask that everyone prepare for the elements as we do go outside as much as possible for recess.
As a reminder, the elementary office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Parents, please make sure you complete the Final Forms online. If you need assistance, reach out, and we can help complete that if needed.
INSTANT CONNECT
The district will move to a new communication text messaging system this year. We are replacing REMIND with a new product that will be easier to use called Instant Connect. This product syncs and works with Final Forms and DASL so that we always have the most up-to-date contact information for parents. At the beginning of the school year, Mr. Leatherman sent a text message asking parents, staff, and students to opt-in to our alerts from our new notification system. Your phone number is not in our system if you did not get that text.
If you wish to join our new alert notification system, text YES to 87569, and your number will be added.
Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Monte
"This month’s counseling lessons will continue to be taught by Ms. Zollinger. Here is a little about her:
She graduated from Smithville High School as well as Ashland University. After college she pursued working with students as a Youth Director at her childhood church. In this role, she discovered her passion for teaching others about the importance of being in-tune with yourself, listening to your body's needs, dealing with emotions, and the overall well-being of ourselves. She loves to travel & have met many people along the way. Because of where life has taken her, she wants to continue to help others on an emotional level. She is happy to work in this role to teach your kids the lessons I have provided for her.
Reminder that Ms. Zollinger will be filling in for class lessons but will not serve as the counselor for students. Please make a referral using this link if you would like your student connected to counseling services. Mr. Sette and Mrs. Mcquate will receive these requests.

2023 NES Veterans Day Recognition
Norwayne Elementary Veterans Day Celebration
This year we will be celebrating Veterans Day as we did last year. The three Norwayne Schools will be doing a combined Veterans Day appreciation with involvement from The National Honor Society students and some elementary students. There will be a reading of the names of all the Veterans in a small ceremony while being recorded.
In addition to the announcement ceremony, the students at NES will be honoring the Veterans by conducting a drive-through parade for any veteran that would like to participate. The parade will take place in the parent pick-up loop as the students will line the driveway with signs and cheers. The parade will begin at 1:30 pm and we ask for those participating to come to the back of the high school between 1:00 pm and 1:15 pm before driving over to the new parent parking lot at NES. We will have staff arranged at the high school to help navigate and start the parade. We will not begin the parade until 1:30 pm. At the conclusion of the parade, veterans may return to the elementary school to partake in some refreshments and then sign out their students as we have in the past.
In the event of inclement weather we will ask the veterans to park and come inside the elementary to sit in the gym. From there the kids will parade around and give honor to their service.
Norwayne Elementary students are asked to “invite” family members that have served/are serving our country to have their name read as we honor America and say “Thank You” to our veterans. We also encourage our veterans to participate in the parade at 1:30 pm.
Please send the sign-up paper, back to school filled out with information if you know of a veteran that wishes to be recognized. There are two separate spaces to fill out. One for the ceremony name reading and a second for the parade at NES. By filling out the information and submitting it to the school you are giving permission that their name and information be posted on our school website.
In memory of many, In honor of all,
Thank you
Veterans Day Parade Ceremony @ NES
(Please note the parade will not begin until 1:30 pm and those participating are asked to meet at the back of the high school between 1:00 pm and 1:15 pm where staff will be to navigate and begin. The parade will have cars drive through the new parent parking lot/loop at NES. Students will be outside with signs and smiles thanking our Veterans)
In the event of inclement weather, we will cancel the parade and offer refreshments in the cafeteria to share with your family. The administration will send out a reminder on the day of if the parade would need to be canceled.

VOLUNTEER UPDATES @ NES
We wanted to share some new information with everyone in regard to volunteers at NES. The district has recently moved to a new background check system (SecureVolunteer, a BIB product) for any and all volunteers in the building. For those of you who frequently visit the NES website, you may have noticed there is a new tab that can be found labeled "Volunteer". I have also linked the tab directly below. By clicking the link you will find information on the volunteer process which will answer many frequently asked questions. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.
Norwayne Local School Volunteering Website
VOLUNTEER PROCESS
The Norwayne School Board believes one of the greatest resources available may be found in the citizens of the community who have special knowledge and talents to contribute to the District. The use of citizens as volunteers within the school program enhances the educational process not only for students but for the community as well. Volunteers may provide additional support in the classroom, promote community-school cooperation in facilitating the learning process and provide for individuals who have expertise in various areas to be used as resource persons. While we are continually grateful for this support, we are also aware of the potential concerns that can arise when volunteers are working directly with students. The District notifies current and prospective volunteers who have or will have unsupervised access to children on a regular basis that a criminal records check may be conducted at any time. Norwayne Local Schools prioritizes safety for our students and has established a new volunteer process that includes a background check.
What is required?
A background check through the district’s online system will be required of all school volunteers.
How long does it take to process a background check?
Volunteers should apply for the check at least one week prior to an event.
What activities require a background check?
While this is not an exhaustive list, here are some examples that do or do not require a background check:
Background Check Required
Chaperoning a field trip
Providing learning support for a classroom
PTO volunteer work
Volunteering for a classroom celebration at school
Assisting in school during the instructional day
How much does a background check cost?
At this time, Norwayne Local Schools will be covering the cost of the required background checks for volunteers.
How long is a background check effective?
Background checks are good for three years. You will receive an email 30 days prior to expiration informing you that a new background check is needed.
***Norwayne Local Schools utilizes SecureVolunteer, a BIB (Background Investigation Bureau) product, for our background checks. Click the bar below to be taken to the SecureVolunteer website.
FINAL FORMS FOR 2023-2024
Parents can follow the link provided if they did not receive an email to begin the Final Forms process. We thank everyone for their patience as we transition to this online system.
