Burkholder: The Jag Wire
Week of February 15-19, 2021
A letter from Our Principal:
The Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of School Trustees voted on January 14, 2021, to approve the Superintendent's recommendation that schools be permitted to invite individual or small groups of students back to campus on a voluntary basis. The focus of these school visits may include: social-emotional wellness supports and interventions, academic screenings, academic interventions and/or small-group instruction. School faculty and staff are currently reviewing guidelines, assessing building readiness, and evaluating a variety of factors to identify students who may benefit from being invited to campus.
At Burkholder Middle School, we are using academic progress indicators, participation/attendance rates, and social/emotional wellness data to prepare a list of students who will most benefit from intermittent visits to school. Likewise, we are using survey responses to ensure we have faculty and staff available to be on campus to provide in-person support. This information will also determine the number of students we can meaningfully assist. At this time, there has not been a start date established for bringing small groups into the building, but we are developing a site proposal to be reviewed and approved by region leadership. Once we are given a start date, we will communicate directly with those parents whose students have been identified for on-campus opportunities.
We understand that many families are looking forward to the time when all students can return to school campuses. As we look forward to welcoming back our communities, we will keep you informed of any additions or enhancements to these plans. As always, health and safety will be our priority. We appreciate your support and patience as we begin offering limited opportunities for students to return to campus.

Christopher Hermes

Math:
Greetings from the Math Department! We would like to thank all the students who have participated in class. There are many ways that students participate. They answer math questions in the chat or in a Jamboard, show their daily work by sharing their screen, share their notes on a camera, send work through a Google Doc and answer aloud in class.
When students need extra help they have shown up in the office hours or attended support sessions. They also have worked together in groups in the breakout rooms; some even connected with friends in a Google Meet to collaborate on math homework outside of “school”. Please take advantage of the available free resources to help support your child. CLICK HERE to see some available resources.
Our math classes also try to relax and have fun. Some classes have participated in a scavenger hunt, such as, “Show me something green in your camera” or solved riddles with the teachers. Other classes may “rap” with a teacher. Mr. Ballard “danced” with a student’s grandma one day to the song “To Be Real.” Some classes share jokes, quotes and riddles. We also have great talent, as shown when the students unmute themselves to sing happy birthday to fellow classmates.
Starting this week, our school will begin the MAP Accelerator Challenge! Grade-Levels will compete to see who can gain the most “levels up” per student in MAP Accelerator. Check out the Leaderboard Standings in the weekly JagWire.
We look forward to the upcoming months!
A little math trivia: the number of minutes in the month of February can be represented by x!
A math riddle: What is the number of squares on the outside edges of a chessboard, and how does that number relate to the month of February? Stay tuned for the answer in the next JagWire...
