God Bless Our Newly Confirmed!
On Friday, February 4, Bishop Checchio came to Holy Family Parish to confirm 39 teenagers as they received the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of Confirmation. For the first time in many years, Holy Family Parish and St. Peters the Apostle Parish on Somerset Street came together for this special celebration. 29 children from Holy Family Parish and 10 children from St. Peters the Apostle Parish received this sacrament.
During these uncertain times, we are most grateful for celebrations like these! Thank you to parents and families for their spiritual support in guiding and teaching your children in receiving the sacraments. We are also truly appreciative of their teacher, Ms. Natalie Borisovets, and all of our catechists for their inspiration and planning in teaching our children. After two years of preparation, plus additional sessions of study, Holy Family Parish is most proud of our children who received their Confirmation!
Mass Readings for Sunday, February 6: Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
This weekend's Gospel from Luke opens our eyes to recognize that our ministry, like Simon Peter's, can come when it is least expected. In this narrative, Jesus asks Simon Peter to go back out to fish and cast their nets. Spending all night fishing and not catching any fish, Simon Peter was skeptical of Jesus' request. Through Jesus' miracle of the bountiful fish that they gathered, Simon Peters begins to believe and follows Jesus in ministry.
Simon was amazed by all the fish they had caught and was embarrassed because he knew that he was a sinful man. He told Jesus to leave because he knew that he was sinful and didn’t deserve all of the fish that they had caught. But Jesus told the Simon and the other men that they would become fishers of men. When Simon and the other men heard this, they parked their boats and left everything they had and followed Jesus.
In our everyday lives, there are signs of Jesus everywhere. May our eyes be open to recognize His works and miracles, then follow in His ways.
Activities for Family
Fisher of Men Craft
In Luke's Gospel this weekend, we hear the story of how Jesus helps Simon Peter and the fisherman gather not only fish, but also begin their ministry as Jesus' disciples. Like Jesus' disciples, children can create this activity to spread the word of Jesus!
Materials
- Colored paper
- Tissue paper (optional)
- Glue or tape
- Scissors
- Markers or decorating supplies
Procedure
1.) Use a blue sheet of paper as the base sheet. Use the different colored paper or tissue paper to create the water and seaweed. Glue or paste these onto the blue base sheet.
2.) Using different color paper, cut out the "fish". On each fish, write different messages that Jesus teaches us. Below are some examples.
- "Do Not Be Afraid." - Luke 5: 10
- "Love One Another." - John 15:12
- "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."- Matthew 5:5
- “Many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.” - Matthew 19:30
- “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” - Mark 10:14
3.) Attach the fish to your craft and share Jesus' message with others!

Uplift Video of the Week!
To PROTECT...and SERVE!
One South Dakota police officer went above and beyond after arresting a DoorDash driver who was on the way to a delivery.
Last Tuesday, Sioux Falls Police Officer, Sam Buhr, was captured on a doorbell camera dropping off a DoorDash Arby's order to an unsuspecting customer. In this video, Buhr is ringing the customer's doorbell, with the Arby's order in hand!
Not only do our officers protect us, but can also SERVE!
