Computer Hardware Handling

What is ESD?
ESD, or Electro-Static Discharge, is what occurs when two objects with different electrical charges are brought together and they give or take electrons to equalize their charges. ESD can happen quite violently and also invisibly, making it easy to damage your pC without even realizing it. ESD can also be quite painful if it happens to you.
Ways To Protect Your PC
When you work inside of a PC or any electronic equipment it is important that you follow a few simple steps to protect yourself and the hardware.
ESD Bracelet
An ESD bracelet, when attached to the case of a computer, both grounds the computer and equalizes the charges between you and the computer,
Capacitors
Capacitors are small electronic components that hold a charge. If you make contact with one, it's charge may flow you to the ground. It is important to not wear an ESD bracelet when working on components that contain capacitors.
Before you even open the case of a computer there is a procedure that you must follow in order to keep the computer and yourself safe.
1. Backup all important data
2. Shut down the device
3. Unplug the power cord
4. Flip the switch on the back of the PSU to "0"
5. Hold down the power button for several seconds to empty the capacitors
Effects of ESD
Electro-Static Discharge can cause two types of damage to components. Upset failure, which will permanently affect the performance of the device, and catastrophic failure, which destroys the component.
