The Weekly Update #4
January 22, 2024
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope everyone is staying dry. As a reminder, we open up our doors early in the back of the building at 7:40 a.m. for students who need to be dropped off early as well as our front doors open at 8:10 a.m. With the current weather forecast of rain this week, I hope parents are able to drop off their students a little earlier in front. Our car rider line was extra-long today and did not finish until 9:05 a.m. I appreciate your help in getting our students into class prior to the 8:50 a.m. tardy bell.
The CISD School Board also approved the School Calendars for the next two years. Please see the attachments below.
New Assistant Principal News:
We did have a change in personnel over the Holiday break within our Administrative Team. Dr. Willie Kelley, the Assistant Principal for G - N, transferred to Conroe High School. He did an excellent job last semester and our students and staff will miss him. In his place, we have hired Mr. Bobby McClain, who previously worked at Peet Junior High School. We are excited to have him on board this semester and he is eager to meet and to work with his new students and families.
Attention 7th Grade Parents who have students in Level 7th Grade Math classes:
This year's 8th Grade Math Credit By Examination test will be administered on Friday, February 23rd at Knox. This exam is available only to students currently enrolled in 7th Grade LEVEL Math. Students enrolled in 7th Grade Pre-Algebra (Honors or Level) will satisfy the requirements to enroll in Algebra I next school year. If your child is currently enrolled in 7th Grade LEVEL Math and you wish for them to take the 8th Math CBE, please return the attached application to Jay Buenger in Room 112 (formerly Dr. Kelley's office) by Thursday, January 25th. This exam is NOT required and should only be considered after reading the following:
8th Grade Math CBE Considerations:
A passing score of an 80 or above on the CBE will allow the student to take Algebra I as an 8th grader.
This exam covers topics, skills, and standards that would be taught over a full year of 8th Grade Math.
The exam is considered very rigorous and demanding.
The test is recommended only for students with exceptional grades in 7th Grade Math, a Masters performance rating on the Math Fall Interim, and a Masters performance rating on the 2023 6th Grade Math STAAR.
There is no charge for the exam.
There is no makeup date offered for the exam.
Students may also opt to take an Initial Credit Course offered by CISD during the Summer of 2024 to gain credit for 8th Grade Math. This is an alternate option to the CBE and also available for students who do not pass the CBE.
Note: Please see the two attachments below regarding Math CBEs (Credit by Exams).
School ID Badges Update:
Due to replacement costs, we have made a few changes to our School ID badge fees. Temporary badges are $1.00; Lanyards are $2.00; Permanent Badges are $3.00; and School ID + Lanyard are $5.00. I told the students that we are starting with a clean slate for this semester. Ms. Clevenger, one of our secretaries, is in charge of printing all temporary and permanent badges along with providing lanyards to students. If you have a question about getting a school badge, please contact her via email at email@example.com. As a reminder, our consequences for no School ID Badges are similar to our tardy policy. We will remind students tomorrow about this policy.
As a new feature, I will have an attachment in the newsletter with important dates for our families. I will continue to update this calendar as the year progresses. For now, please take a look at our dates for STAAR Interim Testing, TELPAS Testing, STAAR Testing, and Final Exams. Also, Knox Junior High School has been selected to give a STAAR Field test for all eligible 8th grade students on February 6th. See the Field Test Letter Attachment below for further details from our Testing Coordinator, Jay Buenger. In addition, we have attached the schedules for our two STAAR Interim Testing Windows and our Final Exam Schedule.
New Junior High School Cell Phone and Smartwatch Guidelines
· Cell phones and smartwatches may be used respectfully and responsibly before school and after school.
· Cell phones and smartwatches should be set on silent mode and be kept in the designated storage area during class time (e.g. backpacks, cell phone caddy, or lockers), and should not be visible during instructional time. Cell phones should not be used for reward time or free time.
· Cell phones and smartwatches should not be utilized in any area of the building during class time. This includes hallways, offices, restrooms, locker rooms etc. Cell phones and smartwatches should remain in the designated storage area when students leave the classroom during class time.
· Cell phones and smartwatches may be used during lunches.
· Cell phones and smartwatches may not be used during class changes and should be turned off or silenced and remain stowed away in the student's backpack.
· Cell phones and smartwatches should not be used to capture video, audio, or images at school or on the bus.
These guidelines have been updated in our Knox Student Handbook and went into effect on January 3, 2024.
9th Grade Course Selections/4-Year Plans
It is hard to believe we are already talking about course selections for the 2024-2025 school year...….but here we are! All current 8th grade students will complete their 4-year plan in their College and Career Exploration (CCE) course(s). This process began November 27th and will go through approximately February 5th. If your student's schedule did not allow for a CCE course to be taken this school year, the Knox counselors will be working with these students individually to complete the 4-year plan.
As the 4 year-plans are completed, please remember that this is a working document and is not designed to create stress. We understand that the plans may not be completely accurate, but we certainly encourage you to make selections as accurately as possible. The only year that will need to be completely accurate is Year 1 as this will serve as your student's course selections for the 2024-2025 school year. Years 2, 3, and 4 will be reviewed yearly and edited accordingly by the College Park counselors. Once the deadline for changes has been communicated by College Park, we will make this information available. At that point, you will not have access to the 4-year plan and all changes will need to go through the Knox counselors. If you have questions, please feel free to contact your student's Knox counselor.
Attention: 8th Grade Parents
As stated in the previous newsletter, 4-year planning is well underway! On last week, the College Park freshman counselors visited with all 8th grade students to share important information regarding picking their courses, graduation requirements, career pathways, and much more. Additionally, College Park hosted the Incoming 9th Grade Parent meeting to assist parents with the high school transition next year. We know this information can be overwhelming but we are here to help and guide you through this process.
With that said, if you or your student did not get the information or were not able to attend the parent meeting, or you simply would like to review it again, please view the videos below before starting the 4-year plan:
