Principal's Corner
Dear Lake Forest High School Family,
It’s Friday, and our first full week of second semester. Students are back in it; the daylight is still lacking, but as usual, we are finding opportunities to shine. Student of the Quarter; Scholastic Bowl; Model UN; TheaterFest’ future Scouts in Chorus; and Senior Nights–that shine is very, very bright!
The Student of the Quarter is one of our favorite, newer opportunities to celebrate the accomplishments of our Scouts. We hear stories of empathy, citizenship, adaptability, and excellence, and it is evident that our Portrait of a Learner is alive and well in the values of our community. Please read below to learn more about this quarter’s honorees.
Next week, we will begin the course registration process. We have updated some of our current practices, and namely, we are hoping our students and parents pay close attention to course recommendations from current teachers and the course override process. In the opening of the course selection guide (from our website), I have included a letter to our students about the process, the importance of balance, and the limitations that a large course selection poses to staffing, so please take a moment to read it carefully.
Please join me in congratulating our Gymnastics and Wrestling seniors who were both celebrated this week.
Finally, this weekend, we will host the North Shore Honor Band in an event that brings student musicians together from ten area high schools. There will be a world premiere of two pieces at the 2:30 PM concert on Saturday!
Wishing you all the best,
Erin

In Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life, UC Berkeley professor of psychology Dacher Keltner, Ph.D. (FAN ’16) presents a radical investigation and deeply personal inquiry into this elusive emotion. Revealing new research into how awe transforms our brains and bodies, alongside an examination of awe across history, culture, and within his own life during a period of grief, Prof. Keltner shows us how cultivating awe in our everyday life leads us to appreciate what is most humane in our human nature. Up until fifteen years ago, there was no science of awe, the feeling we experience when we encounter vast mysteries that transcend our understanding of the world. Scientists were studying emotions like fear and disgust, emotions that seemed essential to human survival. Revolutionary thinking, though, has brought into focus how, through the span of evolution, we’ve met our most basic needs socially. We’ve survived thanks to our capacities to cooperate, form communities, and create culture that strengthens our sense of shared identity—actions that are sparked and spurred by awe.
LET’S TALK | Resources for Struggling Learners
Please join us for our next LET’S TALK presentation on February 2, 2023 at 7:00 pm in the Board Room, hosted by Superintendent Dr. Matthew Montgomery.
All students have different strengths and areas for growth specific to learning styles and academic achievement. During our presentation, we will explain the available resources that all students can access through our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support framework for times when they struggle to make friends, understand a new concept, have trouble concentrating, are unsure how to start a project, need help studying for an exam or lack organization and time management skills. A panel of various support personnel will be available from District 67, District 115 and our school communities to answer questions about resources to support your child. We will also explain the process if your child may need additional assistance through a 504 Plan or an Individualized Education Plan.
Please submit your questions using this form no later than Tuesday, January 31, at 10:00 AM.
Thank you!

Become a TA
Next fall's Juniors and Seniors: this is a credit/service opportunity for you to give back to LFHS by offering direct academic support to students in a classroom. For a minimum of 80 minutes a week, you will be helping students in a course you have already completed and will engage in direct tutorials, reteaching content, small group work, leading mini-lessons, etc.
You will receive .25 elective credits for one semester as a TA (.5 for a whole year). NHS hours may be earned for extra service hours beyond the required 80 minutes. You also need to attend a training session in August.
Please submit this application by Friday, January 13, 2023. Once you receive an acceptance email, notify your counselor when you register for classes. Your TA placement in a class will depend upon availability following the scheduling of your courses. Thank you!

SCOUTS NICE TO KNOW
Students of the Quarter
Atendido, Julian
Not only is Julian a terrific student in First Aid and CPR, he also takes other students under his wing. He is the first to volunteer for practical training and demonstrations on the mannequins and will take time out of his schedule to work with classmates on AP economics. ~Tom Soprych
Back, Simon
Simon exceled in all of his work in Architecture but what separated him from other high achieving students is that he is always willing to put his work aside to help another student in the classroom that may be struggling or not understand. This creates a classroom culture that is student driven instead of teacher driven. ~Darren Barndt
Costello, Ella
Ella has had to balance intensive rehab from knee surgery, requiring multiple days away from classes weekly, with the heavy workload of a Lake Forest Junior student. Stressful and sometimes very defeating! This wasn't the first or only major challenge she faced during high school. Throughout her challenges, she has not only achieved consistently academically, but she has managed to be a ray of sunshine every day for the staff here who work with her. She comes in with a smile, moves herself slowly but surely through our hallways, gets to all her classes every day she is here, completes her work and commits herself to both her healing and her schooling. Ella not only has a heart, but grit, and she's showing she's got what it takes to succeed out in the world, which is what we want to see in our students. Congrats Ella, you deserve to be celebrated for your hard work and tenacity. You should know that you are both appreciated and admired by all who know you here at Lake Forest. ~Lisa Huffman
Dollard, Ana
Ana is inquisitive, enthusiastic and brings a positive energy to class everyday. She goes out of her way to include others, is kind, thoughtful and a caring young person. Ana is a dream student! ~Mary Beth Nawor
Garcia de Leaniz Hernandez, Vicky
Vicky displays student of the quarter caliber performance in my class each and every day. She works hard and is determined. Not only that, but she comes in each day and works on her own without much guidance. This quarter Vicky has designed, built, programmed, tested, and redesigned a successful robotic underwater submarine. She had plenty of opportunities to give up and start another project but she stuck with it. Due to her performance she has completed the most successful underwater submarine this program has ever had. She is currently working on another redesign to make things even better. ~Joe Dudeck
Gilleran, Maggie
Maggie is a tremendously hard worker and has a positive attitude. She has grown in her confidence and in her determination to learn and succeed. These are life skills that will serve her well into the future. ~Jennifer Snell
Hektor, Allie
Allie Hector has been a tremendous student in the classroom this year! Each day she comes to class prepared and makes daily contributions to our discussion. Throughout the challenge of recognizing Figures of Speech such as Chiasmus and Anastrophe, scanning archaic meters, and noting the specific grammatical nuances of Latin poetry, Allie maintains an exceptional attitude of "What can I learn today?" and a light-hearted sense of humor. Allie also has supported the Latin department as an officer in the Latin Club--she uses her amazing graphic design skills to create all of our event posters and also design our cool Latin Club t-shirt. Each and every day, Allie, you bring your best! Well done! ~Ariel Landvick & Phil Woodruff
Hernandez-Abarca, Daira
Some remarks from Daira's teachers: "Daira is a great student. She has a consistently positive attitude, and she works well with all of her classmates. She does her very best at all times. Daira is a quiet force. She works hard, is level headed and has a great sense of humor. She is an absolute pleasure to have in class. As you can see from a few of her teacher comments she is a rock star!"
She shows up, works hard, has a passion for learning, and wants to do the best she can! She tries her hardest every single day. Daria is a light and is always smiling! She is kind to everyone she meets and is always willing to help out. Her future is so bright and I cannot wait to see how the rest of her high school career unfolds! SO PROUD of you girl, keep up the amazing work! ~Maggie Harmsen
Laufenberg, Henry
Henry is an asset to class, specifically Advertising where he was always adding to the class with questions, and content that made class better. Showing up every day ready to learn, engaged and always contributing. ~Brian Sheridan
Terlap, Alex
Alex's interpretation of literature is amazing --- he sees things most students do not and can talk about characters and their arcs in a way that reveal their humanity. His comments in class always move everyone forward. While writing doesn't always come easily to him, his interpretation is beyond his years and more than what we could ask for with any of our students. ~Julie Crouch and Carolyn Konz
