Second Step

K-5 Character Education

What is Second Step?

At EGMS I want our students to be as successful as possible at school. Success in school is not just about reading and math. It is also about knowing how to learn and how to get along with others. This year I will be usisng the Second Step program in your classroom to teach the following critical skills

The Second Step program teaches skills in the following four areas:

1. Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, use self-talk to stay on task, and be assertive when asking for help with schoolwork.

2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’ feelings. Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.

3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger.

4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way

What I will need from teachers and staff

The Second Step program will have music and a dvd component. I will have to have use of technology especially in 2nd through 5th grade. I will sometimes have a follow up card that you can use with your students to reinforce the program.

I will be sending home a parent link letter where parents can log online and view the second step program. This letter also explains the 2nd Step program to the parents.

Lastly, I will occasionally be sending home a home link where students can do an activity with their parents. This will be optional, but I would like to reward those who bring back their home links back.

Thank you for all your support!!!

This year, I will be sending out newsletters to keep everyone updated on where we are in the 2nd Step program and which skills that we are currently working on. If you have any questions or feel like your class needs an reinforcement on a certain skill, please let me know and I will support you!

I'm so excited to get this program going school wide!!!!!!

Counseling Referrals for Students

Just a reminder, if you have a student that you would like to refer, there are 2 different ways you can refer them. You can fill out the referral form. You can also submit your form online through google docs. Thank you!
