Wellness Wednesday Topic: Bullying Prevention Month

Most of us have been exposed to bullying in our lives. Perhaps we were on the giving end as we made fun of a peer we didn't even know just to impress our classmates...or maybe we were on the receiving end...repeatedly shunned by a former friend group because we disagreed with someone in the group. In every case, bullying diminishes all of us.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. It is a perfect time for us to reflect on our interpersonal choices and behaviors. Are we doing all we can do to create safe spaces in our homes, schools, communities and -- most importantly at this time -- online? Be honest with yourself.

See something? Say something! No matter what you did in the past, if you or someone you know is being bullied (now or in the future), be brave enough to speak out. When we see bullying, we have a choice. We can act as if we didn't notice, join in, or say something. Speaking up takes courage. Saying something takes wisdom and strength. Respectfully standing up to bullying takes maturity and character.

We all deserve to be our best selves. Let's not intentionally diminish ourselves or each other.

What are other stressors that create greater need for self-care?

  • feeling worn out
  • feeling a need to "catch up" or "keep up"
  • special challenges (family, health, etc.)
  • options that limit or overwhelm us
  • Other stressors for you are ...

Check out these ideas for self-care. What would you add to your list in each of these categories?
