Teacher of the Year
We would like to congratulate Mrs. Lisa Eiland as she has been named Glengary’s Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Eiland is a 4th grade teacher that has been described as someone who places high priority on her student’s academic success and emotional well-being. It has been said that her students feel safe in her presence and enjoy her calm, confident demeanor. Additionally, she makes every student feel important and cared for. Her classroom is a great place to learn because she makes sure her students are supported as much as they are challenged. Others describe her as creative, motivating, engaging, positive, enthusiastic and dedicated to being an outstanding educator.
Congratulations Mrs. Eiland! You are very deserving of this honor!

Third-Grade Reading Retention Law
Dear Glengary Families,
As many of you may have already read in the last few editions of the Tuesday Tidbits, Michigan Legislature has implemented the Third Grade Reading Law to ensure that students exit third-grade reading at or above grade level, which will impact the current 2017-2018 first-grade students by the time they are in third-grade.
In accordance with this law, and as a means of better informing classroom instruction, districts provided and will continue to provide K-3 reading assessments to students across the state. These assessments will identify students who need more targeted reading instruction and intervention, and will also provide useful information to help teachers tailor instruction to meet individual student needs. In Walled Lake, the screener assessment used district wide to determine student need is called iReady. Since the start of the school year, we have been administering the online assessment called the iReady and determining the reading needs of each and every student.
If your child is a 1st-3rd grader and has been identified as having some reading deficiencies based on this first assessment, your child’s teacher will be communicating with you soon via phone or email. The purpose of this communication is to set up a meeting with the teacher to discuss your student as a reader, share a reading plan developed specifically for your child, and discuss ways you too can help support your child at home. Your child’s teacher will share the specific meeting date and time options with you when she contacts you. The set meeting dates are November 17th, 20th, and 21st. The iReady assessment will be repeated in January and additional students, including Kindergarten students, may be identified at this time as expectations increase.
I want to encourage you to not feel overwhelmed or discouraged if your child’s teacher contacts you. Again, the purpose of this meetings is to further establish our partnership between home and school while also ensuring success for your child. Please feel free to reach out with questions. Open PTA Board Positions
It may seem early in the school year but the PTA is already looking ahead for the 2018/2019 school year. Two main positions will need to be filled on the PTA board. Our current PTA president, Heather Burrows, has held the president position for the past three years and is looking for someone to volunteer to take over this position.
We are also looking for a new PTA treasurer for next school year as the current treasurer is on her second year and the treasurer cannot hold this position more than two years (per PTA Bylaws).
If you are interested in learning more about these positions, please contact Heather Burrrows at email@example.com or 248-884-0885.
Mom/Son Date Night
A HUGE THANK YOU to Michelle Sheldon for organizing a super fun Mom/Son date night.
Is your child a budding artist? If so, we have three upcoming Saturday workshops provided by Young Rembrandts - The Power of Drawing! Your child will learn the following in each two-hour workshop (1:30pm-3:30pm):
Workshop One #F17205: “Monsters, Creatures and Creeps”
This is a great character building exercise and a fun opportunity to draw different facial expressions. We will draw monsters of different shapes, sizes, and colors. The students will carefully analyze the monsters' faces. The exaggerated facial features amplify our characters' personalities and emotions.
Workshop Two #F17206: “Fashion and Fanciful Flowers”
This workshop is inspired by fashion magazines, flowers, makeup accessories, and portrait photography. Students will explore different concepts through fashion-themed imagery. These beautiful drawings offer a fun, yet sophisticated style. We will examine colorful patterns, intricate line work, and compositional layout. The students will draw a variety of flowers, faces, hairdos, and accessories.
Workshop Three #F17207: “Favorite Apps and Video Game Art”
Students will create their own stylized characters that are inspired by iconic video games. These drawings offer different styles from pixel-inspired imagery to action-packed cartoons. The students will draw unique characters of all shapes, sizes, and designs. This provides excellent practice for drawing dynamic characters and exploring pop culture.

Does your child like to doodle and draw cartoons? We have an upcoming Cartooning Workshop with artist Neal Levin on Friday, December 8, 2017 from 7:00pm-8:30pm.
This class will teach children to draw cartoons through simple instruction and games. Students will learn how to make up their own cartoons! The curriculum for this class is revised each year and students will receive a new packet of cartoons for free!
