The Sophomore Scene with Team 2019
October 2016
Fall Break
Today marks the beginning of the second quarter of the school year. Grades from last week are being finalized and below you will find information from Ms. Burke about the end of the first nine weeks and guidelines for how semester grades are calculated. We saw a tremendous amount of success during the first quarter and look forward to even more success as we move into the second quarter!
At the end of this week we begin our Fall Break and I hope that all of you and your families get a chance to catch up with your students and hear about all of their successes and challenges so far this year. I continue to be amazed by the growth and maturity they have shown as sophomores. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to reach out to myself or the team at any time!
Have a great October!
Sincerely,
Adam Poliskie
Assistant Principal Team 2019
Quarter 1/Quarter 2
Now that Quarter 1 has ended, we are beginning Quarter 2 this week. Report cards will be available on PowerSchool Friday, Oct. 7th. Semester 1 grades are calculated by averaging 40% of the Quarter 1 grade, 40% of the Quarter 2 grade, and 20% of the Final Exam grade. This means that if your student is aiming for a higher grade, 60% of the Semester 1 grade is dependent on the work your student does for the rest of the semester. Your student can start Quarter 2 off right by attending morning or afternoon help sessions provided by teachers, seeking out tutoring options, starting a study group with friends, or stopping by the Team 2019 office to meet with Ms. Burke. Parents, please don't hesitate to reach out to Ms. Burke (sburke@brownsburg.k12.in.us or Phone Extension 1702) or your student's teachers if you have any questions or concerns.
College Readiness
College Go Week, a statewide initiative for college and career readiness, was September 26-29. Mrs. Frazer met with sophomores in their English classes to complete a career interest survey and initial post-secondary plan in Naviance. Students were also given a publication on college readiness from LearnMoreIndiana.org. If your student was absent, or if you want more information, please check out this link:http://www.learnmoreindiana.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/21629_LMI_9-10_2016_FINAL3.pdf.
Students may log-in to Naviance at home. There is a link on the high school webpage or click here: https://connection.naviance.com/fc/signin.php?hsid=brownhs
PSAT
We will offer the PSAT (Practice SAT) free of charge to all Sophomores and Juniors during the morning on November 2nd. Please avoid appointments or absences on this day as we cannot offer make up exams. Your student should have received a practice PSAT booklet from their English and Math teacher. There are further practice resources available at www.SAT.org. We will receive detailed score reports from the PSAT that will be distributed to students after Christmas break.
Area 31 Open House
Brownsburg Community Schools has a current partnership with Area 31 to offer career/technical programs to Juniors and Seniors. They are having an open house for students and parents to explore their facilities and programs on January 26th from 6-8pm. In case of inclement weather- a make-up day is planned for February 9th 6-8pm. If you would like to view what programs they have to offer, please view our program of studies guide at: http://www.brownsburg.k12.in.us/bhs/pdf/16-17/BHS_POS_2016-17.pdf
Operational Reminders
Going Home Ill From School
As we’re heading into that time of year where viruses start to spread, students need to see the nurse when they become sick at school or feel they need to go home. The nurse will contact parents to come pick up their student. Students should not be texting their parents to come and pick them up from school. This is considered an unexcused absence unless students go home through the nurse.
Requesting Homework During an Absence
The quickest, most convenient way to get homework during an absence would be to contact teachers directly through PowerSchool. They are able to email most assignments directly to their students. Also, please check Schoology to see what the teachers have posted. If PowerSchool log-in information is needed, please let Mrs. Matherly know.
Yearbook Sales
Yearbooks are currently on sale for $53. If interested, go to www.yearbookordercenter.com to order. Prices will go up after November 3rd, so be sure to order yours now.
