The Groves Grapevine
Building the future, one student at a time! 12/03/21
Our Groves families help our Gators THRIVE in number sense!
Good number sense helps children manipulate numbers to make calculations easier and gives them the confidence to be flexible in their approach to solving problems. Children who develop number sense can assess how reasonable an answer is, and routinely estimate answers before calculating.
How can you help increase your child's number sense? Here are a few ways that can give your student the confidence they need for improving their math skills!
1. Notice everyday math - help your student notice numbers and their relationship to quantity. Involve them in when you are using math, including parts of a whole, repeated addition, and fractional quantities.
2. Focus on the process more than the answer. Increase your child's ability to describe mathematically what has been done to understand the problem and get to the solution.
3. Play dominoes or use dot cards to help your child group a number's value, visualize the numbers, and instantly be able to identify the total of a set of dots for a number.
