HASD Remote Learning
Guidelines and Tips for Families and Students
School and Family Partnership
Parents are playing a much larger role in their children’s learning, while navigating the stressors of work, home life, and a global pandemic. Understandably, parents are feeling a great deal of uncertainty. We are committed to supporting the families who are our partners in remote learning.
Keeping a Routine & Having Clear Expectations
Students should fall back into a "school routine" to prepare for a daily schedule full of learning and fun. Set clear expectations for everything from bedtimes to homework. Students should "log in" in order to report to each of their classes.
Make Space for Learning
Your children will achieve their best work in a quiet, comfortable, and dedicated space devoted to learning. Ideally, this will be a different space than where they normally play games or watch television.
Ask for Help
Remember that you’re not alone in this journey. For parents working with multi-aged children, take a team approach and ask older siblings to help support younger students. Don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher for tips and guidance. Additionally, reach out to other parents to see what they’ve found to be effective.
Remote Learning During In-Person Learning
Teachers will be working with students in class and remote learners simultaneously.
- Students should be prepared for class and logged on to Canvas when the school day begins for attendance.
- Students should have their cameras and microphones enabled for morning attendance and when speaking to the teacher/class.
- Teachers will direct students when to enable & disable their camera/microphone throughout the day.
- In some circumstances headphones are a good way to keep students focused on the learning environment and keep noise down for family members.
- Students should "raise their hand" to talk.
- Teachers may design breaks from devices into their instruction.
- Teachers will work with families to make sure your children take plenty of breaks from devices in order to get time away from their screens. Encourage students to get up, get some fresh air, have a snack, and participate in physical activities.

Remember Empathy
Allow yourself, your children, and their teachers some latitude and grace during these unprecedented times. Understand you are not going to have all the answers and this transition is not going to be perfect. Acknowledge this is not an ideal situation for anyone and give yourself permission to be flexible.
Cherish Time
It is rare for parents and children to have this much time together, so turn it into an opportunity for bonding. Remember, your relationship with your child is what’s most important at this time.
Communicate Appropriately
Families and teachers may need to communicate more frequently during this time. Please use appropriate channels such as Dojo, School Email, and District Phone to reach out. School staff will do their best to reply during their work day, but not during instructional time.
