A New Trio of Heroes Has Emerged
"Greasers" // Hoods or Heroes?
Written by your local reporters from the Oklahoma Herald.
How were these boys discovered?
One sunny day here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a fire was believed to have been started by a lit cigarette. The smoker? The visitors of this old and abandoned church remain unknown at the moment. A group of school children and their guardians at the time went here to have a school picnic. Some of the children were later rescued from the burning church by about two or three heroic teens. Two teens appeared to jump into the church and find the children. Only one returned in time, coming before the church almost collapsing on itself. The other teen went back inside to rescue the one who did not make it out on time. The teens were later brought to the hospital due to injuries from the fire.
Who are these "new heroes?"
The newly identified town heroes are three teens. The teens call themselves "Greasers," or in other words "hoods." They don't seem like they would be the type of teenagers saving children from burning buildings, but don't judge them by how they look. Their personalities are completely different from each other, but they appear to have determination.
Johnny Cade
Johnny Cade, sixteen years old and doesn't seem to have a good life at home. The three teenagers appear to be in a "street gang" together. Johnny can be easily identified by a small cut and bruise on his left cheek bone area. He has a darker skin tone than most people in the town and has jet black hair. His hair is longer than usual teens who live on the west side of town and has big dark eyes. He seems to have abusive parents at home and that results in his many escapes from home. He may look young, but he is actually sixteen years of age. He takes the role of "the gang's pet."
Ponyboy Curtis
Ponyboy Curtis, fourteen years old and lives with his two older brothers at home. He is in a gang along with Johnny and the other teen. He seems to be the youngest of the three. He currently has short, blonde hair and greenish-gray eyes. His eldest brother, Darrel, works two jobs in order to support the rest of his family, following his parents' death. Along with Darrel, Ponyboy's other brother Sodapop, also works a job to support the family. The gang provides a close relationship with his fellow gang members, resembling a family he almost never had.
Dallas Winston
Dallas Winston, seventeen years of age and has a long list of committed crimes. He has been in the local jail many times and seems like he isn't afraid to strike at any moment. He has lived in New York in the past. He has no signs of close guardians or parents at the moment. He has a bed reputation around Tulsa and his tough appearance adds to his "manly self." He has blonde hair, almost white, blue eyes, and an "elfish face." According to Ponyboy, he is the "real character of the gang."
What will happen to these heroes?
What are the court's following actions?
The court is planning on taking Mr. Cade into jail due to his previous murder of west side teen, Bob. Dallas may suffer more consequences due to past committed crimes. Ponyboy may also suffer some time in jail being a witness by Johnny's side in the murder. Although from their heroic actions, they may be punished harshly from past objectives. The three gang members will be taken to the hospital to recover from injuries.
Opinion on what will happen?
In my opinion, the boys should be rewarded for their heroic actions. According to Ponyboy, they may have a bad reputation due to their social class. Their social class doesn't prove anything that they are bad people. Suffering poor lives, these three boys should get at least some credit for this one event. Their lives at home, if they even consider having one, are difficult and hard to deal with. Maybe we should show some sympathy for these poor teens and give them credit for their heroic action. After all, not many people would be brave enough to go back inside the burning church and save the trapped children.
