Mask Updates

This week, Governor Greg Abbott announced lifting the mask mandate in Texas in an Executive Order. As part of our continued efforts to keep our students and staff safe, Fort Bend ISD will continue to require masks and facial coverings in all schools and District facilities.

The District will continue this requirement until it can further review guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Fort Bend County health officials, and the District’s medical advisor, and the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Per the Governor's statement, "public schools may operate as provided by, and under the minimum standard health protocols found in, guidance issued by the Texas Education Agency."

The overall health and safety of the community remains a priority, and District leadership is aware that not all employees have had the opportunity to be vaccinated. Retaining the mask mandate will ensure a safe learning environment for all students, teachers and staff. Students who arrive on campus without a mask will be given a fresh, new disposable mask to wear.

National School Breakfast Week

From FBISD Child Nutrition: Students who participate in School Breakfast every morning during the week of NSBW (all five days) will win a $3.00 food voucher, and students' curbside will receive a Cool Tropics Slush in place of juice with each breakfast. The voucher can be used for any single à la carte item valued up to $3.00. Students will receive a punch card at the beginning of the week at Breakfast, and the card will be punched each day by a cafeteria cashier when a student gets breakfast.

Standards Based Grading @ SMS

FBISD Grading Philosophy

The Board believes in developing students as owners of their learning. To promote student ownership and ensure academic integrity, grades communicate first to students and second to parents and other educational partners each student’s progress toward fulfilling the District’s Vision. To align the grading philosophy and curriculum supports, in 2018-2019 FBISD launched a Grading Pilot in grades 2 - 8. The initial pilot led to a refinement of Standards-Based Grading in PreK-1st grades. For PreK-1st grading guidelines, visit PreK-1st Grade Standards-Based Grading website.

What is the FBISD Grading Pilot?

Campuses engaged in the grading pilot are the first in FBISD to implement a Standards-Based Grading system in grades 2-8. This system changes the way that teachers give feedback related to student progress. Instead of using percentage grades, teachers will provide feedback on competencies that reflect grade-level standards. Students’ report cards clearly communicate academic progress.

Naming of Two New FBISD Schools

Fort Bend ISD is seeking community suggestions for the naming of a new elementary campus, to be located in the Riverstone community, and a new high school, to be located on the southeast side of the District on FM 521. The deadline to submit names is March 10, 2021.

Nominations must be completed using an online form, links are available below and on the FBISD website. Those who wish to make a nomination must submit a written one or two paragraph statement (no longer than 250 words) containing biographical information or historical data, and reasons justifying the suggested name. Names nominated shall generally be names for people or places. If a person, the individual should have attained prominence locally or nationally, and have made a significant contribution to society. If a place, the name should include historical relevance.

Attendance and engagement in all classes, regardless of learning model, is expected from every student, every day. Parent notes are required for all absences within five days from the absence date. Notes must include full student name as well as the reason for the absence (including technical difficulties). If a student misses a synchronous engagement, they are counted absent. Please email all absence notes to Contact our attendance clerk, Mrs. Williams, at (281)634-6322 if you have questions.

1. The student is required to attend all classes for every period a class is offered.

2. The student has to respond to roll call when the teacher calls his/her name.

3. The student has to be engaged and participate in class.

4. If the student is having technical issues, missing the classing link, they should email the teacher during the class about the issue.

SMS Cell Phone Policy

This is a reminder to all parents and students that Sartartia Middle School is an "Away for the Day" campus. Student devices (including cell phones, headphones, airpods, etc), are to be turned off and in a backpack unless the classroom teacher has allowed the use of devices for instructional purposes. Phones and other devices that are visible in classrooms and hallways during the school day will be picked up and held in in the front office until the end of the day. Administrators and staff will be doing hall sweeps to collect all phones and devices that are not being used for instructional purposes. All students have access to a phone in the front office to contact a parent or guardian if needed.

SMS Morning Tutorials

Tutorials are offered throughout the week by each teacher and team. These tutorials are available to all students and offered virtually from 8:20-8:45am through Teams. Teachers have posted their tutorial times and links in Schoology, but you can also access the complete schedule and all links in the attached document.

Daily Wellness Screening

Parents/students must complete a Daily Wellness Screening through Skyward. If your child is cleared, they may attend school that day. If your child is not cleared, they may not report to school and a member from the district COVID-19 contact tracing team will contact families directly. In addition to the screener, students will receive, and must pass, a temperature check before reporting to their classroom. To make student entry as safe and efficient as possible, please make sure the screener is completed prior 8:00 AM each day. Another way students can be allowed in is by showing a screen shot of their “cleared” screen. This screen shot must show the date for that day to be accepted.

Secondary Student Support Portal

In an effort to enhance our technology support, Fort Bend ISD has given secondary students (Grades 6 - 12) the ability to report application and hardware incidents using the FBISD Support Portal via 1Link. Students will select Student Application Support or Student Hardware Support to request assistance.
