Math Intervention Assistant
Denise Glover
This is my second year as a math intervention assistant and I work with students in grades 1 through 3. What I like about intervention is the small group size where more individualized learning takes place. When students take intervention seriously, they will learn concepts and skills that will help them be more successful in the classroom. We also learn through playing math games so they can find joy in learning as well!
Tips for Math Fluency
Count by tens to 120. Start with with 10 to 120. Ask them which numbers is changing in each of the place values as they are counting.
For a challenge: Have them start with 6 and count by 10 to 126. Ask them which number is changing in each of the place values now.
Play with Dice
Throw one dice and have your child get used to automatically naming the number of dots on the dice without counting them. This is a skill called subitizing. Practice this often. Once they can do it with one dice, add another, and then a third.
You can also try with other objects. Students should not count them. They should try to automatically name the amount. This takes practice.
