As the week progressed, we spent more time focusing on the importance of number lines and number order. We went outside to create our own number lines. We discussed the importance of equal spacing between the numbers on the number line due to the equal quantity. Then students worked to identify numbers that were one more or one less. This allows us to start building basic addition and subtraction concepts, while working to develop a deep understanding of number order.
Later in the week, each student was given a number to add to our class number line (clothesline). The numbers were called up in random order to allow students to critically think about where on the number line would be placed without being able to just place the next number in order. This helped students to discuss that numbers were greater or less than other numbers. It also allowed us to think about leaving various sized spaces between numbers already on the number line for missing numbers that still needed to be added.
